I have the standard factory cover for my M3W. It is about as sturdy as a piece of tissue paper and almost as waterproof. My cover has been sprayed more often than a Strictly contestant's hair, with various fabric proofers from the likes of Nikwax and 3M, with little to no improvement in its impermeability and what is added soon fades. The material is aslo beginning to disintegrate, with a number of tears appearing. I have no garage in France and my application to build a car port (abris voitures) has just been turned down, as I am in a conservation area. The M3W also sits in its cover over the winter in its winter coverage but it is fine for that as it is only a dust cover there.

Has anyone come across a better cover? I am not keen on these thin lightweight waterproof plasticised fabrics, that most car cover companies sell. I have one for my Panamera and another for my old 911. The problem with them is how they react to wind, which I get a lot of where my French house is. Tomorrow we are getting a Mistral but a relatively mild one at just 75 kph. I have seen gusts of 150kph in the past, where the lightweight covers flap too much. I would therefore, like to get a cover of much heavier material, something like the cotton duck used for the M3W tonneau cover.

I would strongly consider have a boat cover manufacturer or a tent and awning shop use the Morgan one as a pattern and make you a new one out of Sunbrella or some such fabric.

The elastic is strong and it ties down to prevent the wind from pulling it off. Just make sure, to state the obvious, that the exhausts and cylinder heads have cooled before putting it on.

That is what I have for my Panamera cover and it flaps like mad in the high winds I get at my French house. It is at the very edge of a 1000 foot high escarpment and is the first thing the wind hits coming from the west/Rhone valley. The cover has actually marked the paintwork on my Panamera in a couple of places.

I might talk to M. Querol who is repairing my M3W tonneau at present. He is very helpful and has made custom car covers for my brother in the past. The ideal material would be an American cloth called Sunforger, which is a waterproofed heavy duck with a soft lining.

M3W Outdoor Car Cover

I picked this one up a few weeks ago and it really does the job.A very strong fabric with a very tight weave and very strong elastic bands at various points to make sure it's tight! Water beads up on it and runs right off. Only problem so far is that the water will collect between the front wheel and the hood so it must be dumped off. It also has two straps on the right hand side that can be used to connect with the left side under the car and synched down. It only comes in grey but the bag it comes in is black with the colored M3W badge on it. It too is well made. My earlier cover was merely a dust cover and not even good at that. Pollen would go through it like a highway. Felt good to haul that to the dump!

I'm looking for something sturdy yet more affordable. Heck, most car covers on JC Whitney are a fraction of that $350.00 cost.

I’ve got the same cover as you Michael - very snug though and secure - though it does pool a little behind headlights and in seats . I’ve taken to putting a second very cheap ones with straps over it - keeps the inside one dry and prevents the pooling issue .

Chris247: I have taken to using the Tonneau cover under the car cover as well. We have farm cats who will investigate everything and love to take naps in the car so... That also keeps the pooling from happening in the cockpit.

Better the farm cats than mice.
