In the early 90s when i was selling cars, the Russian Tuna ships were coming into Sunderland Port quite regular, the Sailors would come and beg me to find these Fiats and Lada's, they wanted to pay in USA Dollars, but i refused and sent them to the Bank to exchange in to £££££s

Some were not running motors but they didn't seem to care, we would literally run them down the bank to the Pier, they would pay up to £300.00 each,.....when i questioned a sailor who could speak good English, he confirmed they were not able to purchase spares as most of the cars were kept running no matter what, so the Sailors would take them on board, strip all the mechanical parts off them whilst sailing back to Russia, then just before reaching Port they would through the Shell over board and sell on the Parts with a small share of profit going to the Captain.

My late BIL was the manager at the distribution centre at Bridlington working for the NFC, one of the perks for NFC depot managers was the top of the range car. Well he tried his best and ended up ordering a "fully loaded" Lada Niva, oh how we took the piss when he set off for St Moritz in it for a little skiing trip with his girlfriend.
We (him included) could imagine the reception he would receive from all the knobs out there arriving in a Lada, we weren't disappointed either he loved playing with them for a little while until he got bored.

I did some work at the Lada factory in Togliatti. What a revelation. It was a colossal effort for the Russians. They were in great demand in Russia- because they came with a good toolkit.

I toured the Yugo factory in the mid 80s. I have toured many factories in my previous career and Yugo is right up there with the worst. Cheap car but just a terrible product.

I nearly bought a Yugo as my first car, it was so cheap, but then I saw sense and bought a nearly new Citroen LNA which I had for 4 years at college

Never let me down once

I had a mate who bought a Lada many years ago. He came back to it one day to find it had been broken into. They'd ripped the radio out of the dash, then taken a proper look at it and abandoned it on the passenger seat.
He was depressed........even thieves didn't want any of his car.
