The charcoal filter is mounted in front of the fuel tank (when viewed from the rear), towards the left side. When working on the passenger seat belt the filter restricts access. There is just one self tapping screw, so the filter can be moved out of the way. As Craig explained the filter holds fuel vapor until such time as the engine is up to temperature, then the vapor can be burned in the engine.

This is a job I am going to have to do on my 2009 car before my next MOT after the mice attack so is extremely helpful, how easy was it to release the other end of the belt and thread through the seat guide or did the seat guide require removal as well?

Hi Teknome, been there done exactly that, Sue was a great help and provided a great service for the refurb-ing of my belts. IMHO the belts are installed incorrectly In the first place, they should be in a more vertical plane.
If they do jam engage reverse, put 5k on the rev counter and drop the clutch in and then slam the brakes on, it usually frees the stuck belt.......would be handy if MMC programmed a launch control algorithm into the ECU active only in reverse gear to facilitate rectification of this basic design mess.

Just ordered a set of 12 flexible ratchet spanners from Amazon for £29.99. Also found an old spanner, filed it out for 17mm and bent it in the vice after heating with my gas blowtorch. Ready to go. Thanks for great thread.

Just as a suggestion.

Before starting work on removing the seat belt reel, pack out and cover the area to the left or right of the fuel tank (depending which belt you are working on) with a cloth so that any spanners or fittings that get dropped don't disappear under the road spring. Otherwise it is a fishing expedition with a magnetic probe.

It is best to unscrew the vertical rear panel so you can get a hand onto the reel from inside the car, this helps once the bolt is removed and you are maneuvering the reel out, and feeding the belt and fittings through the slot in the fixing bracket. Apart from the nails in the carpet, and self tappers in the metal panel, there is also a bolt through to the cyclops light to be removed. I didn't remove the whole of the panel, just wedged it open at the top so I could get my hand in.

Getting the fixing bolt back in the reel when fitting the replacement is a PITA due to available height being less than height of the bolt - I angled it in using a pair of locking forceps

Finally, keep calm, it does come out, and goes in, just needs a lot of patience

All the fittings can be fed through the slot in the rear panel, and the slot in the reel fixing bracket, just need to angle them and juggle them so as to feed them through

Ah, I was rather hoping not to have to rip off the heavily glued carpet off of that if possible.

They do, it's just that we owners know it as rev-hang

Mine was just lightly glued at each end. I have avoided using glue when refitting. You may be able to get away without moving the panel. Worth a try.
