Iam in a bit of a dilemma, I am in the middle of a full restoration of my 1981 +8, and the wings are a bit ropey. Do I go for new aluminium wings ( scared to ask how much) or get some fibreglass ones , or spend a fair amount doing my current aluminium wings.
What are your thoughts??

Hamwich on here fitted I think fibreglass ones and they look very good.

There is a thread on here somewhere which covers the process comprehensively, you couldn't tell the difference in the photographs.

I would never fit fibreglass wings, they will devalue the car considerably.
If you fit new wings they will have to be Superform as Vintage wings who made the original 3 piece wings are no longer in business so have a go at repairs of the existing first.

I fitted fibreglass wings a couple of years ago. My steel wings were shot and would have needed many hours of skilled labour to repair. Superform wings are only available for long door cars and would need a lot of work to fit a short-door car, the shape is subtly different.

Steve Barnes estimated something over £5k to make a new set of alloy wings (front and rear).

Sid Watson made me a set of heavy duty fibreglass wings for £1800. The colour match was so good that I left them in the gel coat.

I have no intention of selling the car, it doesn't owe me anything, so I couldn't give two hoots about the value.

Here's the result:

I'm currently in the process of fitting a new vintage alloy LF to my '63 plus 4 to replace the original smashed by an errant truck driver. Frankly, I find the quality and fit appalling. I'm considering cutting it to pieces and welding it back together to try to approximate the correct shape.

regards,
Phil

Sounds like a refurb of my current wings are best. I brought the car knowing that it needed restoration, so I could enjoy the car for a few years and then sell for a profit. How long I keep the car will depend on the other half, but I don't want to devalue the car.

I would put a slightly different spin on things.

If "originality" is important to you, then go for alloy every time, but best see the bank manager first as the cost is going to be eye-wateringly expensive. Restoring your current alloys may be similarly expensive, it just depends how bad they are , and whether you are able to get them to a really skilled panel beater/aluminium welder who is familiar with Morgan wings , there aren't too many of those around.

If you use the car in urban environments where parking knocks are commonplace , or use the car is any sort of competition where an occasional "ding" is inevitable, then go for fibreglass every time.

I am sure Vintage Wings are still in business.http://www.vintagewingsandrads.co.uk/pages/home.html.
Last time Arwyn visited there were quite a few Morgan wings around.

Call Melvyn Rutter. I recall him advertising an offer on wings. He bought a job lot of parts from MMC.
He advertised it in Miscellany but can’t remember the full details. Less than £1000 rings a bell but not sure if each or willing to sell separately.
