See Rog G's reply above. There is only one support bush and that is on the LH side, the other end is on the pinion and its adjuster. I seem to remember dismantling a Ford rack many years ago and the bush in the end was a white nylon type, rather than a metal one. If replacing the bush made no difference it makes you wonder where the play is?

When I had last year my M3W 2013 at the factory for the chassis beef up they also found out that the steering rack had too much play in it.
They replaced the steering rack and renewed the rose joints which where also out of tolerances.
Total costs £1200,=
From which parts £ 600,= and labour around the same.

Does anyone know details of the track rod end spherical joints used in the Comfort Kit?

Might replace them first and see if it helps

There are cheaper lower spec alternatives available.

Unless you can see movement in the comfort kit spherical bearing I don't think that replacing it will make any difference Austin. If it is the same as the others, the clunk is in the bush at the LH end of the rack. M3W55 has had that bush replaced recently and will hopefully supply us with some info about it soon?

It was buried deep in the parts manual. I was looking for steering, and missed it in suspension yesterday 🥴

Thought there was a bit of movement in the spherical joint when I gave the steering arm a pull yesterday, so I’ll start there and work inwards

Dave Hodgson, the MTWC scruitineer who picked up the fault seems keen to strip a rack down and sort out the problem. Will save it as a winter project ......

I finally had a response today. They only asked for a bush for the front arm of the nearside top wishbone - MMC would not give them a part number. As I mentioned, replacing it has made no difference to the play.

The front upper wishbone bush is unfortunately not the steering rack LH end inner bush. No surprise that MMC wouldn't give them a part number to allow a cheaper repair rather than possibly sell a larger, more expensive assembly. MMC don't seem to give anything out and their suppliers are obviously sworn to secrecy as well. I doubt that Quaife will be willing to sell steering rack components, they won't help with bevel boxes. It may be a case of stripping a rack down to see whats inside.....Dave Hodgson?

Does your garage have a good number for the wishbone bush that they used to replace your worn one M3W55? It may well be useful in the future.

Unfortunately not - as I said, MMC supplied it on description and would not give the garage a part number. It is not itemised in the Parts Book.

Looks as though I am going to have to ask them to look at the rack, although the potential cost makes one wince. It would not surprise me if Phil B has taken his apart more than once.
