I have seen people wedge their petrol cap in it and the attendant come racing out swearing at the top of his head. Supposedly if you are not holding it the fuel line is not earthed and more chance of a spark causing the place to go up. No idea if there is any truth in the danger but no way could you leave a car like that here without getting in a stack of trouble.

A short run for petrol as the car & I are off to Allon Whites Wed for them to fit heated seats whilst I wander around the Shuttleworth collection.

Chris, most peoples shoes are non conductive due to rubber / plastic soles so that line is a myth. I think it is so you don't overfill the car & spill fuel. John

It was the same in the UK. You could flick a little lug and the trigger would stay in until the automatic cut-out. Sometime in the 1970s the facility was removed but even today I notice that on most pumps the flick switch is still there, albeit disabled.
