Hi,

M3W has just passed its first MOT. Only 6k on the clock and the near side bottom ball joint is an advisory. Can any one who has changed one pleaae confirm that its the Mark 1 Metro ball joint that is the replacement.

Cheers

The ball joints are Mini Metro pre 1984 Quinton Hazell part no QSJ1059S, having changed mine you also need a 1 13/16 deep socket and an impact wrench.

If it's just the rubber gaiter that's failed, these can be obtained cheaply online. I'm not sure how old your car is, but there seems to have been a 'bad batch' of gaiters fitted some time around 2013/14. Check out this THREAD.

If it is just the rubber boot then you will find some on ebay.
I bought some for the 4/4 there about 6 years ago. Bought enough to do all the joints on the Gemmer system of rods.
Measure the dimensions of your , search on ebay for the boots and select the correct size.
Not expensive.

Thanks to all for the info. I will inspect myself to see if its just the boot or whole joint and order up either part and replace. Rog I have access to a ball joint separator, I assume that replaces your impact wrench?

Hammer type or compression type?
If its the latter might need a heavy duty one.

No you need the ball joint separator to pop the taper out of the suspension arm and then the socket and the impact wrench to undo the ball joint from the upright. I initially tried to undo it with a spanner but could not hold the wheel tight enough to get enough leverage to get the ball joint undone, with the impact wrench it was very easy. This is what I have https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/cir13c-1-2in-impact-wrench-kit-12v/

Good grief Rog, that’s cheap. Does it do a fair job?

I might be having one of those.

The top and bottom front upright ball joint rubber gaiters are 30 x 12.5 x 27mm (Boot 2 from www.balljointboots.co.uk). If you replace the joint torque it up to 105 lbs/ft and the nut to 56 lbs/ft.

That impact wrench does look good value if it works well.

I have had an earlier version of that impact wrench for about 4 years now, and have used it quite a bit on stubborn fasteners, and when rebuilding the gearbox on my 3 speeder. It is certainly not industrial quality but for occasional use it is fine. The only downside is you need to plug it into a 12v Aux socket on a car to operate, or connect it to a spare car battery.
