Good day, chaps. Can anyone recommend a reasonable and reliable source for me to insure my new electric bike? I have tried Yellowjersey.co.uk but have been put off by what, IMO, are their massively unreasonable demands; this implies to me that the company may be reluctant to pay out if and when the time comes.

Are you talking about a Pedelec, Steve? Ours are covered under our NFU home insurance. As the individual value is <£5k, they didn't require any particular measures to be taken other than they be locked indoors when at home. NFU flippin' brilliant at claims handling - which, let's face it, is all that one requires of an insurance company.

Pedelec? Never come across that word before, but "eBike" seems to be prevalent now. Anyway, Tim, thanks for the tip. I'll talk to the NFU as the next renewal date approaches. I must admit to being a bit surprised by the lack of a more general response to my query, given how much has been said in these pages about eBikes - but perhaps their owners don't insure them...

There are different e-bikes on the market

I have 6 bikes..the most expensive being a Moulton stainless steel bike at £7000.. I was quoted £60 a month for that bike alone !!!

I have never insured my bikes.

I carry a good selection of "cycle tools" (honest officer) and have used my large cycle lock to dissuade an attempted theft on one occasion.


Pedelec refers to an e-bike that uses an electric motor to assist the rider ..the power of the bike increases as pedal pressure is increased by the rider.

Bosch is market leader at present...useful in hilly areas to give a boost or in v windy conditions.

Exactly. They are also restricted to 250W and must cut assistance over 20kph. An e-bike that does not require the rider to pedal must be taxed an insured like a motorcycle.

Thanks everyone for the clarification. So mine's a Pedelec - a new Raleigh model, see here . In fact we have just ordered a second one for The Leader of the House. Because of a dodgy knee I can't walk as far as I used to (and I'm not ready yet for a mobility scooter !), so this will be a good little runabout. VERY impressive uphill in Turbo mode. When folded we can get both in the car, so off to Pembrokeshire in two weeks to give the bikes a proper road test on the hills between Little Haven and Solva.

Forgot to say, that option is quite appealing. I don't commute, so there will be no leaving it at a station all day. And the bikes are protected with a Kryptonite D-lock and strengthened cable

Good luck with the hill coming out of Little Haven towards Broad Haven - that's got to be a good test.
