Thats very much the impression that I have, plus the media reported that Police Scotland are taking special measures against speeders. I might be more fun to take a motorhome for the three of you.
There's certainly plenty of speed monitoring on the A roads, but who wants to drive on them? They are all full of tourists, coaches, and motorhomes. The B roads are all NSL and on the best bits you can have enormous fun without worrying about being nicked for speeding as you rarely exceed 60mph anyway.

We did the NC500 a couple of months ago , great fun but in a Porsche Cayman which was uncomfortable in the single track bits. Absolute blast on the military road mentioned above though !

With the other suggestion of doing it in Winter (in the photo thread?) perhaps I should consider taking the 90 in late Autumn/early Winter (sorry Ewan, don't want to clog the roads up too much ). Did part of the route 14 years ago in the 127. Still had the hound then. and I rented a cottage in Culkein Drumbeg for a week. Pretty lucky with the weather. It was a very peaceful week.

Many thanks for all the great comments, pictures and tips (loved SFG's original post!!). Born and brought up in Edinburgh, and have many happy memories of family camping holidays in diabolical weather along the west coast as kids, so this trip is something of a nostalgia binge for my brother and me! Never got to the far north coast though, so now, almost 60 years on, want to cover that part of Scotland before I'm past it or the route is totally clogged with the motorhomes. The timing was dictated by my brother's dates in UK, so no option of changing dates. The suggested alternative of a motorhome is definitely off the cards in view of SFG's propensity for using them as target practice with his air rifle!!
Thanks for the concern about the roll over bar - I took the pictures just after taking the tonneau off, so the seats are reclined further than when driving and the headrests are off - the headrests, which I almost always have in place when driving, are forward of the roll over bar in my driving position, so I think the head and neck are as well protected as in most road cars.
Hoping the weather gods are in our favour, and the cars don't misbehave!
Thanks again for all the posts! Will report and post photos when we get back

Ken, seems to me that you are made of the right stuff to make the best of whatever weather is thrown at you... (-: As I typed we did our West Coast jaunt in October quite a few years back and well before social media created traffic jams in the Highlands, the weather at the time catching us (West central Scotland inhabitants) by surprise but in a VERY good way as can be seen in the pics I posted in the gallery..Looks like the weather may have potential this weekend for any who might be heading in that direction..? If you are looking for a good B&B in the border region you might try https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel...ries_Dumfries_and_Galloway_Scotland.htmlIt is run by a friend, Morganeers have used this B&B in the past and seemed to enjoy their stay. Gordon the male half of the couple who own it was a compeditive rally navigator in his younger days, and knows many a back road in all areas of Scotland...while competing in the Carrera pan Caledonia and other more compeditivly serious events (-: Looking forward to a full debrief on your return...(-:

Well we are in Applecross and have had a blast so far. To all those who warned us of traffic and camper vans etc, we have had clear roads, mixed weather, but some opportunities for top down driving, and very few campervans or caravans! Don’t know where they’ve gone but the few we have come across have been sensible, courteous and moved over promptly. Only one was awkward, but he got the message, and a finger or two, and let the line of cars behind him through eventually! Torrential rain showers from time to time, but not all day Can’t get pictures to post using an iPad, so they will follow when I get back next week
