I have followed Dave's plan. put in a new fuse. Input 12v - no problem Switch test with output connected to test bulb - no problem Re-connected everything and - no problem, brake lights working. Realised that the reversing light is on the same fuse so checked the bulb . looks alright. Pt the car in reverse, no engine just ignition on, Blew the fuse.
I will have a look underneath tomorrow at the fitting but where do i find the reversing switch ?? hope its not in the gearbox.
Thanks for continued assistance
Paul

But must the reverse switch be the faulty item or could it be a short on the way to the rear drive bulb?

Paul, as it's far easier to access the light / bulb I'd start there, the bulb holders are a known source of trouble due to corrosion & even the bulb could have blown & shorted internally (worth a quick swop-out)

Happy birthday Jon! Paul I have known several reverse light switches go short circuit (seem to be mostly on Minis - the originals). They are located above the gearbox usually activated by gearlever position. However, as Jon says, start with the easy bit
