Please make sure to wear a helmet with this roll bar!!!
Or at least put padding on it - otherwise it makes driving more dangerous than without.
It looks as it is right behind the seats. A simple rear ending might kill you.
That´s why helmets are mandatory on race cars with roll cages.

Please believe me as I have done accident research for quits a while.
Would not like to see you had smashed at the roll bar...

Yes I always worry when I see people driving cars with unpadded roll bars and no helmet. To be honest, it seems to me like they are trying to mitigate a very small risk, that of rolling over, by introducing a very large risk of incurring head/brain damage in an otherwise perfectly survivable impact.

Unless one is wearing a properly-tightened 4 or 5 point race harness it's very easy to underestimate how much a body will move in a crash, and in my experience a race harness restricts movement so much that people tend to slacken them off a bit.

Thats very much the impression that I have, plus the media reported that Police Scotland are taking special measures against speeders. I might be more fun to take a motorhome for the three of you.

There must be alternate routes through the highlands. Anyone got a “Not the NC500” route?

Alternate routes... hmm..? Alternative to a campervan which seems to be Howards alternative...? I suspect my alternative might be a tad different again...

The NC500 was originally designed as a route to encourage touring cyclists so criticism of cyclists using the route is a bit unfair. Being a motorhome owner I am also aware that it has become something of a rite of passage for motorhome owners who spend hours on forums discussing « doing «  it like it was some sort of expedition. I drove along the route about 30 years ago in a car and it was empty and beautiful. I don’t think I would drive it now but I’m sure you’ll have a blast!

The other thing to do at Applecross is to go into the Applecross Inn for lunch and order a haggis and cheese melt on ciabatta, accompanied by a pint of ale. No need to worry about drink/drive, as the food will fill you up so much you'll need to have a wander around for an hour or so to digest it before you set off again

We'll be up there in the first week of September, fingers crossed for the weather.

Just remember the drink driving laws are a lot stricter.Not that we drink and drive.
I was told by a landlord in Ayrshire that the police will look out for english registration plates.
So one pint might put you near the limit 22micrograms per 100 ml of breath!

Yes, I hope everyone realises I was joking. Daytime drinking whilst on a driving holiday is bonkers - mind you, so is driving in the morning after a skinful the night before.

The last time I drove over the Applecross pass was on the Scottish Malts Rally. We came across an elderly pair in their motor caravan, who had been driven right off the road by a bunch of hooligans in Lamborghinis, who had howled past us at silly speeds further down the pass. They had not even stopped to see if the pair were OK. We tried to help but their caravan was so bogged down in the soggy peat at the edge of the road that we could not move it and of course, trying to jack it was out of the question. At least we could phone for help (they did not even have a mobile) and the helpful breakdown folk said they would come with de-bogging tracks etc, as it was far from the first time this had happened. The rally marshals who had caught up with us by this time, phoned their contact in the police, to see if the bunch in the Lamborghinis could be tracked down. Apparently they were later in the day but I don't know what happened.
