I have promised an old friend of fifty five years to visit him at his home near Varberg in Sweden in the spring before we both get to old so I thought it would be fun to drive up in the 4/4. (wife not interested).

Any advice on the route? Time is not a problem and I would like a varied route however the main purpose is to visit him and not engage in a grand tour and I do have to drive back.

This is a Grand tour! Buckinghamshire - The Chunnel - through Belgium - entering the Netherlands - over to Germany - up north to Lubeck - two ferries through Denmark - crossing a bridge over to Sweden - then up to Varberg. A total of 977 miles (calculated on highways), and then back again..... The landscape of Southern Sweden is extremely flat, as is Denmark and possibly the route through The Netherlands. Belgium I do not know so well. Of course you can avoid highways and go on B-roads etc, but that would be even longer. When you say that the main purpose is to visit your friend and not travelling Europe per se, I am not so sure this is a good idea. You might get quite fed up when you get to Varberg. To be blunt, I would never have done it.
I live in Bergen, Norway, and sometimes go the aprox. 300 miles to Oslo with my Roadster. When I arrive, I am always happy that the trip is over, in spite of spectacular scenery.

Hi, Just to add an alternative.
You can take ferries from north Germany to Sweden and avoid Denmark.
A good opportunity to take a rest and still be on your way.

Travemünde - Malmoe

Perhaps I phrased my question in the wrong way, I know it will be a very long drive and I could visit my mate in a much more time efficient and cost effective way however I still have a sense of adventure. Varberg is not the final detestation but a small lake some way inland and although I do not intend to do a grand tour I plan to take it easy stopping off during the journey. Apart from wanting to see a friend of over fifty years (we last met fifteen years ago before he moved full time to Sweden) is to use the Morgan. I love driving especially in the Morgan and until recently used it for regular long journeys for a purpose, however the reason for these journeys have not ceased so I am worried that in the future I may be just driving the car just to take it out of the garage for a spin.

Time is not a problem and I do enjoy my own company providing if each evening I can enjoy a nice meal and hopefully a glass or three of something enjoyable I will be happy.

Going to Sweden:
I drove this bridge twice today, driving it both directions to cross the Oeresund.

It is a fun drive that isn't it. If you do it on the train you can watch on your phone the telecom supplier swap countries right at the mid point.

In 1999 we did a 3 week, 8.800 km, grand tour in our motorhome.
Belgium - The Netherlands - Germany - Denmark - Sweden - Finland - Norway - Denmark - Germany - The Netherlands - Belgium.

We took the Storebaelt bridge in Denmark, the Oeresund wasn't even build then.

On the North Cape we met an Italian guy who came on his Moto Guzzi California (with 5.000km on the clock). I bet it must have been brand new when he left Italy.

The last day we drove 850 km home from Billund (Legoland).

Very exhausting trip but so many good memories.
