Yep Corroded about 4" from the drum on off side (uk). It also looked as if some "rusting" had occurred after the break. Conjecture but it is possible that it broke a seized a while ago meaning the h/brake was only working on the near side where the tie wrap had broken.
Anyway all done & working. About 6 hours labour. Seat runner is now a bit stiff so more fettling to come.

The rubber cover cracks and allows moisture to get at the outer and then the inner cable. Both rust and eventually one inner will snap. Not sure of later cars are better but my 2012 had cracked rubber covers both sides.

My 2009 4/4 Sport cable rusted through due to a fault in manufacture after 2 years from new. It rolled back into the front of the neighbours Merc but he is a good friend and let me polish it out for him, it cracked the horrible plastic number plate mount on my car.

I do normally Graham I can't recall why not on this occasion, after that I always put a bit of 2"x 2" behind or in front of a rear wheel on the Sport
