Hi there, I have steel painted wire rims on my 4/4 mog and now I'm looking for the possibility to let them chrome plated.
Does anyone have any information for me: to do ore not to do, and if yes: what are the estimated costs?

Hopefully Phil Royle will be along soon - one of the good tyre dealers (Longstone?) did a deal a couple of years ago with stainless wires and some decent tyres as a bundle.
Might be worth a look to see if that option is affordable.

Think the issue would be that if they are plated with spokes in situ, the plating would soon crack away where spokes meet rims due to flexing. It’ll be far cheaper and less heartache to get some new or used stainless wheels or simply repaint your existing ones.

Anthony I think new will be cheaper than the difficulties involved in re chroming (environmentally dreadful). I would contact these people about a wheel and tyre deal they are the experts in their field. MWS

I would say stick to painted wires and get yours refurbished - painted wires look so much better anyway!!

Have them "chrome " powder coated, much cheaper , someone on here posted a picture of their wheels recently and they looked good.

If you really want to do it, then I suggest you contact Derby Plating Services. They don't deal with industrial huge plating and have a great reputation amongst the classic car crowd.

I am having an XK150 done up and new wire wheels are £350 each I believe and manufactured in the UK!

Another vote for Derby Plating from me, did a superb job on some rare & delicate parts for me

I suspect they may turn you down, as they won't risk their reputation & just plate 'anything' and fully assembled wheels may be a no, (they won't do Mog 'screen pillars, as they feel chrome will eventually flake off due to the poor base metal MMC use)

The weak spots in the wire wheels will be where the spokes fit to the hub and rim. There will be flexing and any chrome plating that spans that gap will crack, creating crevices that are a nightmare for corrosion. Crevice attack. It is why body panels used to have a non hardening sealer to close them off. Even paint will suffer this eventually.
Stainless is your best bet, so you might consider selling yours and buying stainless. A bit of a money saver depending on what condition yours are in though.
