I never had any back pain. But six years ago, within a few weeks, so much so that a chiropractor could no longer help. One night the pain was suddenly so severe that I screamed out loud. My left foot was numb and without muscle power and I was suddenly slightly incontinent. I went to the hospital, got strong painkillers and very quickly an MRI without waiting. That night a disc had jumped out and had squeezed the nerve.
I was operated in another hospital only one week later microsurgically. For one day I had full sensory and muscular motor function again. Since day 2 after the operation my left foot is numb under the sole. But I never had pain again and the muscle strength is also ok. After the operation I had two months of outpatient rehabilitation and since then I have been doing nordic walking and things like that. Back then, the surgeon told me after the surgery that the feeling was coming back and that it was just a hematoma that was receding. But I waited too long. After six years of no loud complaining I am more and more disturbed by the numbness.
Recently I wonder if I should have another operation because of the numb sole of my foot.

Two and half years ago I damaged my back causing terrible sciatica on my left
The final damage after many years of bad posture and bad lifting was lifting a full Morgan leather suitcase off the the back of the Mog when we went on hols
6 months of terrible pain. 24 hour pain killers. Numerous trips to the docs to get referrals. It was taking me an hour just to get dressed in a morning
£600 spent on chiropractors. £500 spent on private physio
Both didn’t seem to help at all. I look back and think it was completely wasted money
The breakthrough came when I client recommended Robin Mckenzie’s book ‘Treat Your Own Back’
Spent £13 on it
Did the exercises religiously several times a day and straight away I knew it was helping
2-3 weeks later, sciatica gone and now very rarely get back pain
I still do the excersises a couple of time a week and at the gym
Just before I got the book I had a back scan through the NHS and my problem was a severely bulging disc in my lower spine pushing into my sciatic nerve so if anyone has similar lower back problems then I can’t recommend the book highly enough
I just wish I had known about it before spending a lot of money and time getting nowhere

I would also give Alexander technique a plug here. Only once you've sorted the acute problem. It's a great way to improve posture. Nick

+1 for the Mckenzie book. I bought this on the back of a recommendation on here. (Might have been you Stewart) When I was having NHS physio, I mentioned the book and the physio said that a lot of the modern techniques were based on Mckenzie's work. I followed a combination of the physio's advice and the book and my back's been a lot better. One piece of advice which rankled but made sense was to recognise that you're getting older and that you do need to keep the back working but pay more attention to potentially injurious movements. I still get twinges but when I do recognise the damage starting, I back off before the serious damage is done

Ten years ago I had a bad back - X rays found nothing - GP suggested an osteopath. Within 5 minutes she had diagnosed the problem which was my stance when working with children which had misaligned my pelvis. She spent 8 sessions putting it back again and suggested exercises to prevent a recurrence. She was very honest and said that if she could not fix it in 10 sessions that she would not carry out further treatment. Had no problems since. Brilliant!! Incidentally, I`ve heard of an osteopath who is also a podiatrist - works for the NHS - calls himself a Public Footpath.
