Did a very chilly 75 miles today - how on earth does the heater work?

94 plus 8, there's a push pull knob under the steering wheel that seems to do nothing much and a rocker switch on the dash that looks like it should work a blower but doesn't? (furthest right)

thoughts welcome, thanks

Gary

Is the pull knob under the steering for adjusting the steering wheel ?

The push pull knob under the dash should turn the heater on / off, could the inlet have been blocked off in the engine bay?

The rocker switch should switch the screen fan on.

Sounds to me as if the four footwell heater vents must have been omitted at the factory, and this hasn’t been noticed since 1994

OK, a little more detail.

The push pull knob works full and freely and moves the crank on the heater box, but does this just control air direction or actually regulate the amount of heat?

The rocker switch does indeed work ( see below)

And yes there are air vents in the footwell that do allow a dribble of hot air into the cabin the the car is moving.

A quick check shows the fuse (fuse15) has blown. Replace the fuse and still no blower but the wires get warm and the ignition light dims. Remove the heater motor and replace with a test bulb and the switch is indeed working correctly.

Conclusion. Motor may have seized causing th fuse to blow.

Question. How do I remove the blower motor?

Initial question still remains, what does the push/pull knob do?

Thanks for the replies.

Gary.

The push/pull knob usually opens and closes a valve on the hot water supply (cooling system) to the heater. That supply is usually from the cylinder head.

Thanks for that, yes I would have thought that too but its nowhere near the coolant pipes, It just operates a lever on the side of the heater box under the dash.

cheers

Regarding the 'push/pull' knob under the dash, many years ago someone wrote into Miscellany with the following advice. 'In = On, Out = Off'. I have always found this helpful when on the road. Presumably, the on/off valve is inside the heater allowing water to circulate through the heater.

thanks for that info.

Re-read the drivers handbook for the car yesterday - no mention of it at all, or even what the various switches do. Although theres lots of info about greasing and changing brake shoes!

Cheers

The knob directs air over the heater coil which I think on your car is permanently fed with hot water.
