i am planning a trip to Austria next year to visit friends near Salzburg.
I am proposing driving legs of approx 300 miles per day. max.
This has me in Reims one night and Stuttgart the next night.
Does anyone have any first hand recommendations of hotels in these two areas?

I suppose it will be dependent on Brits being allowed on to the continent in the final analysis.

Appreciate the note re boutique, but we stayed in the Novotel on the edge of Reims and it was excellent. A bit on the large side but quiet, comfortable and with good food and a nice pool for that essential cooling off with a beer hour when you first get to the hotel. Otherwise, we always do well with Logis although we prefer them to be away from the larger cities.

Make sure you detour to look at the old Grand Prix stands whilst in Reims. The cathedral in the city centre is worth a look - there is a secure underground car park very close to the cathedral.

Agree with Paul re Novotel in Reims (we were on the same trip). It has good access to the motorway network and you know exactly what to expect. Check out the various ULEZ requirements for Reims, Stuttgart and Salzburg - you will end up with so many stickers on your windscreen that you will have difficulty seeing out. 300 miles per day in a Morgan will be tiring and won't really allow any time for anything other than driving. Check out the Via Michelin journey times and add at least a couple of hours for traffic etc.The autobahns near to and around Stuttgart and Munich can be very busy.

We are frequent travellers to the Tyrol region in Austria and stay at the Novotel in Metz as a stop off. They aren't boutique hotels, but they are better than the Formula 1 hotels and are well situated on the motorways.

As Max5 says the motorway around Stuttgart to Munich is busy so allow extra time for that leg and don't forget to buy a vignette when you get into Austria.

There is a 18 day consumer protection period. This period can be avoided by indicating that you are buying the vignette as a company (this is also possible for private individuals without any problems).

The motorway between Stuttgart and Munich also becomes very fast when you get closer to Munich when there is no traffic jam. On the left lane of three lanes about 190km/h on average. Although I drive approx. 140 to 150 km/h with the 4/4 on the motorway if it is dry, I can be frightened already if on the left someone overtakes with 240 km/h. And this is not too rare on this motorway. So I almost never use the very left lane with the 4/4 on this autobahn because a. car from behind can approach very quick out of the blue and on the other hand I try not to be too slow in my lane to soften the speed differences somehow.
Nevertheless I like it that people drive fast and fluently in Bavaria and with the family car I am a member of the left lane. For example, if you drive from Stuttgart to Freiburg and Basel, you usually have greener people on the road. At least they behave that way. Often they drive 120 km/h on the left, they overtake very slowly, and they stay on the left for a long time when you are waiting behind them. It often seems that they want to educate other drivers to drive slowly. The Alemanni have a totally different mentality than the Bavarians.

Good timing MJF. I am planning a tour for next May to the German Castle Road and Romantic Road. Only last night I estimated that Metz is a good stop for our return journey, and I was wondering about hotels.

i travelled through Germany in1979 on a Honda 250. i remember two things that struck me at the time.
1 when overtaking a slow moving truck look far, far, far back in your mirrors for cars coming up.
2 the exiit clover leaf is extremely tight.

Oh yeah..! and the bike was underpowered.
