I'm very near to tears right now as your post brings it all back when we had to have my last cat put down due to cancer. He was a beautiful moggie of no particular type but a good friend. He managed to survive a trip through a bailer in the field behind us one harvest time but couldn't beat the big "C".
I have never been able to bring myself to have another so I just stroke the neighbour's cats when I see them

Here for a good time not a long time!!

The last cat was an Abyssinian. He too was very affectionate but also much more his own cat. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abyssinian_cat
Ours was very similar to the one in the photo below. (I can't find a good photo of ours at the moment)

In general terms I prefer female cats because of the males habit of spraying all over the place with stinky pee.

George is just a common tabby but has grown into a fine cat.

You are correct Peter. But if you have them neutered they usually are more affectionate.

The Dundee Cat

In an attic room in Dundee town
This poor old woman spread the tale around
She lived fifty years in her old top flat
With no other company than her old tom cat
Well, I hope so, say so, fifty years in an old top flat...

Chorus: Poor old woman, la-la-la-la-la-la-la....eh,eh.

Now one night they sat by the fire quite glum
When who do you think come down her lum (chimney)
I'm your fairy Godmother, have no fear
To grant three wishes they sent me here
Well, I hope so, say so, I'm your fairy Godmother have no fear...

The old woman looked down at her empty purse
I could always use some cash of course
The fairy waved her wand around
And lying on the floor was a thousand pounds
Well, I hope so, say so, the fairy waved her wand around...

Now a lovely face and a figure divine
For just one night I wish were mine
The fairy says I'll have a go
She made her look like Bridgette Bardot
Well, I hope so, say so, the fairy says I'll have a go...

This lovely girl by the fire she sat
She turned her attention to the old tom cat
He's my only love and here's my plan
Tonight change the cat into a handsome man
Well, I hope so, say so, he's my only love and here's my plan...

This handsome man at last drew near
And her whispered softly in her ear
The night is young but you'll regret
the day you sent me to the vet...!!!

Have noticed all tabby cats have a “M” between their eyes. This to indicate they belong to a Mog family.

Chris and family- so sorry for your loss. They are such a key part of the family and myself and Lady HB had a tear in our eyes reading your story.
We currently have four cats (no kids) and they are Lady HB’s babies. The latest is a one eyed kitten adopted in October at the request of our local vet/CPL who know mugs when they see them....when I lost my little bro last year the cats were vital in helping us cope with the grief. When the youngest disappeared a month later we went four steps backwards for a number of months until we got another one.
So we think you should get another one sooner rather than later and also that you should go to CPL not a breeder. You have the power to change a cats life for the better, where it could have had a tough start in life. Your post shows a cat would hit the jackpot if it chose your family....
Best wishes
HB

Peter- An Abyssinian is one of the breads my wife has been looking at. HeadlessBlue - 4 is a lot to look after but I guess probably not that much more work than 2.

Just wondering about introducing cats to each other. In 2006 my wife's cat of 18 years died and we got two kittens hoping that getting them together would mean they would get on. We got a Siberian Forest Cat called Tolly after Leo Tolstoy the Russian author of War and Peace. Kip was named after Rudyard Kipling the author of the Jungle Book. Tolly turned up first and we had him for a week on his own before Kip turned up, we were worried would they like each other and tried to get the cats to sniff each other though a door but they got together and played nicely. Then after a while got tired and went to sleep cuddled up. Tolly is a very independent cat mainly spending time on his own, some time with Kip but trying to ignore us humans most of the time. Kip on the other hand would come running as soon as I got home and loved human company.

13 years later and they were still friends 90% of the time although did have their odd fight. Even last week I found them both cuddled up together. They would groom each other, more Kip licking Tolly than the other way around but a bit of each. I also thik it iwas more Kip finding Tolly on the couch, chair, etc. and cuddling up to him rather than Tolly finding Kip but I expect a bit of both finding each other.

The last few days Tolly has been walking around the house coming up for he occasional pat but walking off reasonably quickly. A bit more time with us than usual but I think missing the company of Kip and accepting in his view the less appealing company of the humans. I guess what I am concerned about is how Tolly would react to another cat. He obviously liked Kip company and grew up his whole life with some cat company but would he accept a cat stranger. He does seem pretty territorial about our back yard from what I can tell so not sure he would accept another cat that we chose, I somehow doubt he would bond like he did with Kip but not sure. Some people say get another cat straight away before Tolly gets used to being on his own, others say don't get another at all until he is gone and then get two again like we did, it is hard to know what is really the best thing for Tolly.

A guy from work has suggested that boy cats bond better than girls and definitely better than mixed sexes in which case we should be looking for another boy cat and just hope we don't get too much spraying - we have had a bit every now and then frown Or maybe I should be talking to a vet about it rather than just listening to someone at work.

Anyway thanks everyone for reading and commenting.
