In moderation , glass of wine at weekends , we are Very aware of its distructive capabilities and are also aware of many who drink at lunch times and in the evening most days , its very easy to slide into this . Too many people we know who have had very bad outcomes. Food tastes much better with a glass of water with a slice of lemon and some ice , try it !
Wishing Caroline a fast recovery Peter .

I stopped - over 12 years ago. I always did a clean January off the booze - years before it became fashionable. One year I just extending the time period and have never been inclined to drink again. A few months ago, a mate - was working out in the time I had not drunk - what he had spent on drink. Over 12 years (he is a 4 drinks a night and more at weekends man) he had spent £63k Enough for a new Roadster and my waistline is several belt sizes, less than him

I think society as a whole drinks too much. I blame the lost of pubs and the way that Supermarkets are allowed to sell booze at a loss! in the old days for most people you would visit the pub maybe twice a week to sociality with other people. Or walking the dog you would nip in for a pint at the end of the walk. Like a mate of mine who use to run a pub people today can go and drink a 18 pack of beer for the price of 2 beers in a pub. This is going to bite us on the bottom in a few years time. When I was in the Royal Navy we always would have a alcoholic and drug lecture every couple of years, so everyone knew the score so to speak!

Its a lifestyle choice, and not just drinking, there's smoking, eating the wrong things etc. Most of the things we do are habit and for some its harder than others to give up or even moderate things we enjoy doing.
As far as I'm concerned I am a moderate social drinker and my palate has changed so I no longer enjoy most wines though enjoy a glass of good wine. It would be easy therefore for me to give up drinking but less so other things I enjoy. Its not so easy for some even when given an ultimatum, so telling everyone you have stopped is probably a good thing and part of a positive mental attitude!
Good luck and keep us posted on your progress!

Well done Peter for supporting Caroline so completely. I gave up alcohol and coffee because of an odd inner conviction that they were doing me harm. No problems with alcohol but giving up coffee was really hard. Reminded me of packing up smoking in my 20s. I guess it's just that as we get older alot of "avenues of pleasure are closed" to quote Basil Fawlty. My doc says we should imagine these things as filling up a glass in our body. It can be filling up for years with no symptoms but suddenly when it's full, it's spilling over and causing problems. Turning off the tap for a longish time allows the glass to empty right back and then you can have the occasional drink or whatever, without it getting near to spilling over.
Hope all goes welland best wishes from me, Nick

Best wishes for a speedy recovery - apparently the liver has remarkable self-healing properties if damage is caught in time. Well done for joining her in the alcohol-free zone . When I was working a number of colleagues said they were only moderate drinkers and then said that they would have a bottle of wine each eveningbetween two and then a couple of shorts to help relax. It is strange what people consider moderate. I had to go for my BP check-up last week and was asked how many units I drank in a week and worked it out to between 3 and six units per week which the nurse said was fine. I may have a beer or good cider with Sunday lunch, I may have a glass of wine once in a while and a single may once per week in the evening with cheese & cracker - a bottle of Laphroaigh will last me several months so I don't consider myself a heavy drinker at all - but what I do drink is generally good quality (except for wine which I cannot tell the difference between Aldi and the £20 stuff). Luckily SWMBO has always been tee-total and so I am never tempted to drive even after only a pint. All the best Peter & Caroline and best wishes for a speedy return to health .A colleague had Weil`s disease which attacked his liver and he was told he would be lucky to survive- he gave up drinking completely and now has the very occasional beer and is still with us in good health 30 years later.

Best wishes to Caroline Peter.
We have two bottles of wine over four days, always with a meal. Then three days without. Occasionally we'll share another bottle over two days mid week, but not often.
We don't have the addictive gene so we can do without, although I much prefer wine with food. I've never drunk beer. To me its fizzy pop, and I just don't see the attraction. Even real ale.
Over the hols, we'll also have some champagne, and port, and brandy or whisky, but not much, a shot or two maybe.

Peter all the best for Caroline & her recovery. Now I am retired I will try to moderate the intake as I destress. we have finally got senior into a retirement flat so she moved out this week. We funded her purchase & finally next week we get our funds back as she completes her house sale. So no excuses now not to moderate my intake.

Alcohol can be a double edged sword for health. However, there is a J shaped curve for mortality and alcohol consumption which has been noted in numerous validated studies. http://www.princeofpinot.com/article/2163/Essentially a glass of wine (50 ml) per day reduces the risk of cardiovascular death compared to non drinkers. Cheers!

That's an interesting curve. Nothing drinking is equal in something with 4 drinks. Whereby I think that the handicaps shift from cardiovascular events to liver stress.
