Well to be honest speed tape is a step up from duct tape, nice aluminium (thats another, aluminum) rather than cloth.

"Crescent wrench" as they originally were made by the Crescent tool company.
Ahem. only since 1915 or so. The screw-adjustable spanner was invented by Edwin Beard Budding (who also invented the lawnmower) just down the road from me in Thrupp, back in 1842. There's an example of his adjustable spanner on display in Stroud Museum. I always thought the adjustable spanner was invented by Bahco. This from Wikipedia "The story of Bahco began in 1886 when the Swedish inventor Johan Petter Johansson (1853–1943) established his company Enköpings Mekaniska Verkstad in Enköping, Sweden. Johan Petter, also known as JP, was an inventor and industrialist. He invented the modern plumber wrench (1888) and adjustable wrench (patents in 1891 and 1892)." Most folk think John Boyd Dunlop invented the pneumatic tyre, not so it was Robert William Thomson of Stonehaven Kincardinsire who got a patent in 1845. Dunlop got a patent in 1888 which he lost then Thomsons patent came to light.

Loads of different designs have been tried with varying degrees of commercial success. Budding was the first to design a screw-adjustable wrench in 1842, but other later designs have ultimately proved to be more successful.

Gosh - what have I started. I do remember when I as a smoker, In the early 70's, asking on my first assignment to New York whether anyone could give me a fag... I suffered a mildly embarrassing situation on a business trip to Boston involving a female colleague and her fanny sack. There was a post some years back from an American gentleman describing how he'd had to work on his engine wearing a vest and suspenders (having broken down on the way to a formal function).

Just laughing as I grew up in San Francisco Faggots was another reference to gathered firewood of kindling size. Growing up in SF must have been a pretty eye opening experience. Having contracted hepatitis through a bad transfusion in the 1960's I spent way to much time in a Veterans Administration Hospital in SF and was in the infectious disease clinic; now that was scary and sad all rolled into on place.

On my very first visit to Toronto I was taken to the restaurant at the Skydome. I spotted Meatloaf on the menu, so sad that I'd try it as I'd heard of it but never eaten it before.
I had my first mouthful and announced enthusiastically "Mmmm, tastes just like Faggots".
