It's rubbing against the hood fabric folds, which increases friction, I sometimes have to feed my belt in by hand to help it retract

Yes, that's exactly it. I try to pull as much of the hood away and fold it under the windscreen but it's still foils it somewhat.

At my 4/4 the improvement lasts since 6 month.

Of course I fold the "easy up" away from the belt as far as possible and I make sure that no bag or clothes are in contact with the belt.

I think that the spray reduces the resistance of the belt when it rolles up, so that the weak spring is compensated somewhat.

As I mentioned the function -on my car- is now "not perfect but much better so I don´t intend anymore to remove the seat belts.

I had the same problem on my +8 after a hood conversion.
I noticed that the seat belt guide bolted to the top of the rear wheel arch was quite small


compared to the seat belt guide bolted to the back of the seat.



I changed the short guides for a pair of the longer ones. This moves the seat belt further forward and slightly inwards.



I have found, with the hood carefully folded back, there is enough clearance to allow the seat belt free rein.
CAUTION;- I cannot vouch for the safety aspect of this modification since I haven't had time to crash-test my +8 yet!
