I can remember seeing Datsun cars with plastic plugs screwed into the base of the track rod ends in the early 70`s. The plastic plugs could be removed exposing a pre threaded hole that accepted a grease nipple... I had a few Datsuns, and neither greased or required to replace a track rod end on one... Recently replaced what I imagine were the original track rod ends on my mid 80`s +8 at circa 30k miles as the result of the boot having cracked with age..No obvious wear in the track rod joints.

My Dolomite had three U/Js on the prop-shaft. Each spider had a grub-screw, which had to be located, removed without losing, and then a nipple screwed in. This meant rotating the back wheels to find the grub screw. What fun that was. The clearance to leave the nipple in place was very marginal.

Sometimes it happens to me that I don't leave the nipples in place. It also involves rotation.


Sorry for this sort of immature and ancient joke, but in this case I could not resist.

Update!

I took the car to a tyre garage to set the tracking. He was somewhat confused, and it ended up with it being a joint effort.

The net result was a really good set up!

Happy with that, though can you hire the laser aligners? It might well be cheaper...

New tyres, next.
