After years of cursing my inability to make things beyond a certain point usually ending in another cry of "if only I had a ****ing lathe" followed by "and had the faintest idea of how to use it" I have now done the deed and have set up a workshop in my old coal shed. The lathe had sat unused for years in a corner of the workshop at the company I work for and is now in "safe storage" in my shed. Took a fair old clean up and sort out to get it working properly* and has now been used in anger, or at least a mild fit of pique. The picture is of the very first thing I have ever made on a lathe, is only a bit rough, and if I can manage another ten of them I will have a new set of screws for the boot liner! Could take a while.

*at least I think it's working properly!

The therapeutic properties of owning and using a lathe are greatly underestimated!

Certainly needed a fair bit of therapy after getting it out of a van, through the tenement, across the back garden, into the shed and up on to the bench on my own!

Impressive Calum Last time I cut a thread on a lathe was in the 1960's. Quite gratifying just using a die successfully a couple of weeks ago.

That looks to me like highly skilled work. Now you can emulate the chap who is using his lathe to fabricate an entire three wheeler.

just remember to not wear a tie whilst using the lathe

Something to be proud of, well done. I feel the pain as I once bought a Myford 7 Lathe, lots of tools, read books and all I made was swarf. Went to see my pal Peter Mulberry (Mulfab) who gave me a crash course, 3 weeks later and after a lot of practice I had made a spacer washer for my +8's lower air scoop.

Forever known after that day as the £1800 washer...…. you know its easy to hate other Morgan owners, especially when they are right ;-)

Screw count has hit four!

Well known fact; a machinist should be able to make anything to any size and I can certainly guarantee that no two dimensions match across the four screws! There's versatility for you. Despite appearances I did use the same knurling tool in the same manner for all four of them but I am now all knurled out.

I did cheat with the thread cutting and used a die, got a feeling I would be really pushing my luck trying to cut an M5 thread up to a shoulder on the lathe at this stage of the learning curve. It's been frustrating enough getting to where I am; luckily the lathe is securely bolted down on to a substantial bench so would be really difficult to throw out of the pram!

Dinner is now in the oven and I've just opened a fresh bottle of what hopefully will be a very pleasant Argentinian red cutting fluid.
