Bloody ridiculous. Increased traffic density, travel time, etc and practically no effect on carbon emissions. The article states that it's intended to reduce nitrogen compound emissions, not carbon. And there are loads of studies out there which prove that to increase overall traffic throughput a reduced peak limit improves average speeds, it's the whole principle of smart motorways as it reduces or eliminates the standing wave effect. Could it be that you don't like this move because you like to drive fast on motorways? I simply dont believe those studies. I regulalry use a so called Smart motorway on the way to and from the marina and it regularly snarls up as soon as they impose the limits. I have yet to see traffic flowing at anything like the 40mph limit regularly imposed. 20mph is more likely. But as soos as we get to the end of this speed limit and back to 70, the traffic spreads out and starts flowing. If these studies were correct then stopping traffic altogether would increase traffic flow.

Simple mathematics can show you that lowering the speed limit for a given number of cars that depart a point over a period increases traffic density.

Disingenuousness is never a good look, mate.

The purpose is to improve overall throughput. Densely packed cars travelling at a lower steady speed is more effective than allowing high speeds to then create bunching effects and standing waves in the traffic.

I’m not a fan of so- called Smart motorways- because as they are busy ( potentially) saving the environment - I’m getting killed because there is no hard shoulder to pull on to in an emergency.
The way that the 50/60 signs are randomly switched on/off on a clear afternoon with little traffic on the M5/M4- cannot have anything to do with traffic flow- more cash flow- into the local coffers. It's a proven fact that fewer peeps are getting killed on Smart motorways, this is because most peeps are killed on the hard shoulders. When the speed limit changes you get 1 minute to slow down before the cameras operate. So providing you obey the limit you have nothing to worry about.

The purpose is to improve overall throughput. Densely packed cars travelling at a lower steady speed is more effective than allowing high speeds to then create bunching effects and standing waves in the traffic. Pity it doesn' t work isn't it? The reality is that all those cars are spaced out over a stretch of road, often too close, I will admit. You then drop the speed limit, for the sake of argument let us say to 50%, in a few seconds you have all the cars that were spread out over say two miles of road trying to get into one mile of road and at the same time trying to maintain a safe distance. Now we know that they didn't have a safe distance in the first place but that distance will not be halved until the traffic is down to 25% of the original speed (which will actually happen fairly quickly). At most the spacing will be reduced to 75% of the original spacing. So there you have it. All those cars can not fit into the available space and before you know it you have stop start traffic crawling along.

For circular highways with heavy commuter traffic at big cities a speed of 80kmh provides best capacity management and traffic flow according to several scientific evaluations.

If the safety is a “ proven fact” why has the Government stopped any further development pending further enquiry?

With speed limits and cameras and too much traffic these days I get manny more giggles driving an old car, it’s not about the speed then but more for the involvement

A real petrolheads choice. I love the lazy gate of the Aero with it's big lumpy V8 for this reason. It is fun rowing it along in a high gear and just enjoying the experience.
Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.
