I thought the budget was too good to be true. Hidden in the depths apparently are proposals to raise road tax for car based upon CO2 bans. My Roadster already costs £555 pa but the Daily Wail suggests that could rise to £4,500! Forget the Pole Tax riots this is serious (possibly)!

Just remember, if it's in the Daily Mail it can't possibly be true.

That may be what the Daily Mail says (not my daily read, so wouldn't know) but my reading of it is that for NEW cars registered the year one rate (which is significantly higher for 131gCO2/km and above) will be applied every year. So up to £2,175 on a petrol car.

Moral of the story? If you want a gas-monster, buy a secondhand car or keep the one you've got. Can't hurt secondhand prices if older cars are (much) cheaper to tax.

Its on NEW cars. I believe there are big increases in road tax for new luxury and 4 x 4 because Jaguar are trying to sell cars this month before April's increases.

My pre 2017 2.0 litre Euro 6 diesel tin top is still £30 a year road tax, though I wouldn't be surprised at future hikes in diesel (and petrol) prices as the motorist is seen as a cash cow.

My wife’s diesel Mini Baker Street is zero rd tax. I don’t think we’d find a new one like that again.

A roadster is €2250 per year here in Ireland, so count yourselves lucky so far!!!

The article also talks about cars pre 2017.

There is quite a good article on ThisisMoney on the topic which seems to line up with most other reputable sources:

Here

It looks as though there is a call for evidence that could see a worst case of the £2k annual road tax for post 2017 cars.
