Meanwhile here in central Europe it sounds much like everywhere else. We are self isolating to the extent that we only go out for walks and, when necessary, food from the local supermarket and then we wear gloves and keep our distance. I'm not so worried about catching the virus but would be devastated if I unknowingly and carelessly caused others to be infected.

We are on the top floor of a 4 story block and have a roof terrace and in this week of beautiful weather (winter returns tomorrow) I've been painting the timber deck. The neighbours have two small children and it has been a delight to see them turn the roof into a wet slippery slide and the kids laughing and sliding down on to their terrace. It's safe.

The lovely G now works from home and I provide technical support. As she works for the national broadcaster there's pressure for her to remain healthy and there will be days when she has to work in the main building with colleagues. Should one of those colleagues test positive we will be in full isolation i.e. no outings at all.

We have the Vienna woods on our doorstep so long walks on forest trails will help to keep healthy and sane. Well at least the appearance of sanity. The Morgan is in an underground garage and as much as I want to to take it out - where do I go? A mate suggested we meet up at a roundabout in our Morgans and drive round in circles shouting at each other. The airfield has closed and the Kitfox is locked in the hangar. This bit hurts, especially as these first days of isolation have seen the best flying weather of the year.

I like Tim's approach; physical distancing with social solidarity. Oh and humour helps. "AUSTRIANS ARE BEING TOLD TO STOCK UP ON SAUSAGE AND CHEESE. THIS IS CALLED THE WÜRST KÄSE SCENARIO."

My parents have been self isolationg for quite a while now, at my sisters insistence - however, they've had cards from both neighbours offering help and support if needed. Lovely that the community spirit is alive and well.

I am in lockdown. 3 heart operations and my heart is the surgical equivalent of a direct hit on the family butchers.

So welcome to the world of online shopping.... or not actually. No delivery slots available for weeks - not possible to book anything. Combined with rationing - you can only buy 2 tins of soup which may have to last a month until the next delivery (assuming you can book a slot).

Oh, and I'm moving house in April. If there is a lockdown and we are told not to leave the house - I'm sort of stuffed.

Happy days.

But amidst all of this, I watch what's happening in Italy with utter disbelief... my heart goes out to our continental cousins. Awful.

Peter love the corned beef story and the Anzac biscuits both remind me of mum , she was an Aussie too , I note the table cloth . Now I must have a crack at making corned beef.

My grand father fought at Gallipoli with the Welch regiment. After that he wouldn't touch corned beef. It was part of the rations with extra flies for free.

To get the pink colour you need Prague Powder (or Prague Salt - the same thing). Be careful not to use more than the recommended amount in the brine.

You can find recipes for preparing the brine on the net. I find 4 or 5 days in the brine is enough and I would be careful with the amount of spices you use on your first attempt.


My grandfather (Hughes - now there is a good Welsh name) was also at Gallipoli with the Royal Marines. He was never very complimentary about Churchill, who he blamed for the disaster.
