I am no fan of McDonalds and it must be 45 years since I had one. Have you thought of the thousands of staff that will loose their jobs or at least their income? Not so funny for the (mainly) youngsters that work there I fear. Are you still laughing now?

Most people are being very understanding but there are examples of human behaviour that still surprise me, very sad.

Interesting decision ..... with their 'drive through' system you would have thought that they would be in a robust position to switch to takeaway only operation ..... staff segregated from customers and customers isolated in tin boxes ......why not just shut the restaurant part ...there will no doubt be money at the root of it ..... sad for the staff....

I must say that I have nothing but admiration for McDonalds.

In my 43 years as a fireman many times over when we were out in the early hours on a minus 2, cold, sleeting night when you wouldn't send a dog out, they opened their doors, fed and watered us all complementary..

This generosity is second to none and appreciated when your employer supply nothing.

A lot goes unseen when the majority of people are asleep..

Why is there only one monopolies commission??

McDonalds has found what I believe is a good cooperation in Germany out of necessity. They have created a contract with Aldi for the rental of their employees. While McDonald has to close the restaurants, Aldi urgently needs additional staff to refill the goods.
I don't know how it works exactly because most McDonald's stores are franchised. But it does work and it was even in the main news as a successful example in times of need. At least they care about what happens to their employees which can only be a good thing.

McDonalds is a franchise organisation. So the Head Office decision to close will have been taken by a different set of people than the franchise operators/managers who now risk losing their businesses. This, in addition to the employees who are on zero hours contracts who will not only lose their jobs but may fall outside the Government's financial safety net measures announced so far.

Puzzled why any of this is a cause for celebration.

Just don’t see it as funny when people loose their jobs whatever the reason, I am totally unaffected and I don’t know anyone who works for them but anyone affected (and I honestly believe this is the tip of the iceberg) would not find it funny or a matter for joking no matter how well intended.

We use McDonalds a lot, particularly late at night returning from football matches. The food's good and the coffee's excellent. I really have had much worse burgers in some quite expensive places.

McDonalds uk consists of 82% franchise, the remainder are company owned.
The decision to close was to protect the health of both staff and public.

I sometimes use the one on the A34 if I am really early/late to work. Double Sausage/Egg McMuffin is a good roadblock for hunger.

We are having an office "last McSupper" this lunchtime for the very few of us in. Just rying to work out if we wipe the boxes or the burgers with the dettol wipes, it might improve the flavour.

I agree re the rubbish but is it fair to blame the company for the legislation that demands packaging and morons that chuck it?

In Austria restaurants and canteens were closed down at the beginning of last week.
McDonalds had to close their places too.

Supermarkets remained open, but had problems with replenishment after people began to stockpile certain products.
McDonalds continued to pay and second employees to supermarkets to support the logistics there.

I‘m not a BigMac fan but McD did impress me with this supportive action
