Hi friends,

Little question... Is it just me, who is entirely incapable, or ist that a feature of the +8?

With my Roadster, I found a position of the fuel pistol, that allowed me to fill the tank within a reasonable time. Not so with the +8. The pistol keeps shutting down, so the filling process takes forever. Tried it twice and gave up each time, before the tank was completely filled.

With the Roadster, it was also possible, to pull the pistol out and let the fuel flow into the filling hole. The +8 has a spring loaded “lid” covering the filling hole, which is pushed open, when the pistol is inserted, so this solution does nor work. Next time I will try to hold the lid open, with a cocktail spool with a long handle. But that can’t be the solution.

How long does it take you, to fill up your Morgan?

Sunny greetings,
Ivo

My Roadster is slow to fill. I get kick back on the nozzle when the tank is probably no more than 75% full. I sometimes get better flow by moving the nozzle around but it is inconsistent. It just takes patience.
However, having had a problem last year by overfilling the car, I tend now not to worry too much about getting a really full tank.

Try turning the handle to 12 o’clock, may help.

My old mid 80`s +8 has two filler caps, the idea being to open both while fuelling up at petrol stations, one opened as a filler and the other opened as a vent to stop the pump cutting out due to back pressure, works just fine.. with no fiddling around..!

Its one of the many 'joys' of owning a Morgan I'm afraid , 'they all do it sir' is very true of this particular trait ! 3. 0'clock position seems to work on this model ! banghead

The +8 of the late 90s and early 2000s can be slow to fill but there are a couple of things you can do to alleviate the situation.

1 As above use the filler hose at the 12 o'clock position rather than 6 o'clock

2 Take off the panel behind the spare wheel to expose the hose from the filler cap to the tank. You will see that it goes through pretty sharp bends as it transits from the cap on the drivers side , to the tank on the passengers side. Make sure that this hose is not kinked anywhere. Release the jubilee clips and try to get the hose to "line up" in a way that eases the flow. Be careful you don't precipitate another problem by kinking the overflow hose by doing these mods.

While you are there have a very good look at that hose , it can and does perish, as I can testify, quite an expensive part (approx £50 from my poor memory) but better replaced than a fuel seepage and

3 If all the above does not give sufficient improvement take the fuel filler cap off the car's back panel (after first releasing the jubilee clip holding it to the hose) , and very carefully drill another hole (or two) in the secondary cap (where the cut off plate is located) near the existing one. This will aid venting. However if you are in any doubt about where to drill , please take it to a Morgan dealer or below enthusiast who does and enlist their help. It goes without saying that you MUST do this off the car , the last thing you want is metal swarf in the tank. Also make sure that the cap is thoroughly cleaned before refitting, you must get rid of ALL the metal filings. i will try to take a picture of mine at some later date (bit dark in the garage to get a good image)

I have an "Aston Martin" filler cap mounted by my Morgan dealer, and I don't have any trouble to fill up.

No problem on my 2003 +8 if the nozzle is at around 7 or 8 o'clock at almost all petrol stations - one in Inverness just wouldn't fill at normal speed - seems it was the shut off on the nozzle was too sensitive as my brother's e-Type had the same problem!
