A sad loss, but he did have a good innings.

The greatest driver never to have been World Champion.

1958 Portugese GP ....Moss helping Hawthorn with his helmet ....later in the race Hawthorn was disqualified ....Moss had seen the incident and went to the Stewards to defend Hawthorn resulting in him getting his points back ..... those points would mean Moss would miss out on being World Champion .....Back when F1 was a real sport!

Met him once, at one of the early Goodwood Festival of Speed events. He was sitting on the rear of a D Type Jaguar, chatting to anyone. A great personality, sportsman and all round racer.
RIP Sir Stirling.

What a sympathetic experienced and exceptional driver he was. A real personality. RIP, Stirling Moss.

Like so many of his generation a real gentleman. RIP.

One should not be sad for him. To be a champion in motor racing before all the modern safety systems and track safety provisions and survive to the age of 90 is an achievement in itself. We should be happy that someone who gave us, and the sport, so much has lived such a full life and wish him well for the next, whatever that may be.

I met him a couple of years ago when he asked if he could visit the MSCC stand at the NEC - we had a 3 wheeler on the stand similar to his first car. He was an absolute gentleman with vast knowledge and a great driver. I still have a piece of ash frame which he kindly signed for me - and I have the piece of carpet from the show upon which he stood. He had a good and eventful innings but most of all was one of the good guys.

I recall a T V interview once when Stirling recounted an incident with the police. He was stopped one evening for speeding and as the policeman approached, he exclaimed “ So who do you think you are, driving like that... Stirling Moss?”
