Good morning from Dubai, I have a simple question, the engine warning light has come on for no apparent reason, car is running perfectly, i think it is a spurious warning,it has happened once before but cleared itself after i drove it rather energetically, that hasn,t worked this time. Bearing in mind i,m in Dubai and there is no dealership here now and i dont have the gizmo fault reader or access to one how do i clear it? would disconnecting and re-connecting the battery do the trick?

It can do in some cases but didn't for me. I bought a cheap gadget from eBay that reads the fault and puts out the light. In my case it's an emissions issue, I suspect yours is the same if a drive cleared it before.

Mine (2011 3 litre Roadster) does this with some regularity. I reset it with an OBD-II gizmo which plugs into the plug located behind the centre of the dash (it's on a reasonably long lead - once you've found it you can easily locate it without grovelling under the dash, then just tuck it out of the way when you've finished). You'll need a phone app to control it - details should come with the gizmo - then you can view and turn off the fault codes. Seems to be the car's ECU detecting a slow response from the O2 sensors in the exhaust headers. Nothing to worry about (unless it wont turn off i guess).

Look up OBD-II on Ebay: get one that uses Wi-Fi to connect. Best tenner I've ever spent!

Agree with vincentvg. Invariably the fault appears as "02 (or lambda} sensor slow to react" Based on my experience with three 3 litre Roadsters, an OBD11 reader should be supplied with the cars as standard equipment! Overfilling the tank can also trigger the warning light so it is better to stop filling at the first "click".

Get an OBDII dongle from e bay & the free or netter buy the torque app.
My 3l Roadster still does this from time to time especially if the car is hot then stopped for a short time & restarted. This of course is fun for MOTs.

I don't think even disconnecting the battery will wipe the error code.

Disconnecting the battery will not clear the codes or put out the light on cars with OBD2. That's because for many years ECU's and OBD systems have used E2PROMS (sometimes written as EEPROM, Electronically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory) and so loosing the feed will not erase, it needs a signal from a code reader kind of device.

As for lights going off themselves some fault codes are classified as lower priority and a number of cycles (often start, run for x min, drive above x MPH, switch off) are programmed in and turn off the light but will not delete the code (in some cases).

Its all a bit of a muddle, my BMW Motorbike had OBD and a 5x drive cycle would put out the ABS light but only for the low voltage fault code!

Best advice is as above, buy a code reader as it WILL happen again and once you get the hang of using it its 30 seconds to read and clear the codes. My last +4 (2008 Duratec) regularly put the MIL light on as Graham can attest...... as he has seen me do it on many occasions ;-)….. and heard the bad language!
