Looking for some advice please. My 2017 car has the below style of rotary heater & fan control knobs: ![[Linked Image]](https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-HwBrghg/0/cccb7efc/X3/i-HwBrghg-X3.jpg) I recently purchased some stainless warning lamp bezels from Cain and they will look very smart and finish the dashboard off nicely. Unfortunately I then got to thinking that they would look a whole lot nicer fixed to his rather swish looking black anodised engine turned aluminium veneer... Fitting the veneer would require the dash to be removed and I've read enough on here to be reasonably confident in tackling that job. However, to fix the new veneer would require the heater and fan controls to be removed. I read somewhere that there are some small grub screws holding them on but if mine are secured by this method then I can only guess that they are on the inboard side of the dash because they are not visible from the cockpit side? Or will the knobs just come off with a confident tug? Any advice greatly received.

My heater control has never had the detent feel. It just operates in a smooth slightly stiff fashion which is fine. Consequently it was a surprise to hear of others discussing the detent action, which I can now understand given image below showing the ball detent holes. ![[Linked Image]](https://i.imgur.com/4oK5vTC.jpg) Have I lost a ball

Bob, I did exactly what you did, i.e. Cain’s veneer and bezels. I posted a picture at the time. You can do this, no problem. Drop the dash, and loosen the grub screws. Make sure to put some towels over steering wheel to protect the dash. As my dealer inflates the tires much too much, the grub screw on the fan would loosen up due to the rattling... I found a small space/gap under the dash, through which I could fix it again, but boy finding this little screw, is painstaking...
With the dash off, I labeled all the wires with numbers, so I could put things back easily. BTW, I thought that Cain provides excellent instructions on what to do.
Succes! Bert

Many thanks for the responses. I think I'll get the veneer ordered, take a brave pill and crack on.....

Richard, now you mention it mine's the same, but as it works fine I can't be bothered to disturb the dash (again)

Well that was a fun half day spent on Sunday dismantling and then reassembling the dash. Fitted one of Cains machined anodised aluminium veneers and I'm rather pleased with the result. The whole central instrument panel has to be stripped down and reassembled so that the switches fit on rather than under the veneer. The non-functioning (on the 4/4) immobiliser LED was an issue as the only way to remove it from the original panel and then refit it correctly in the new one is to cut the wires and re-solder. Also the heater and fan knob grub screws were a pain to get to. Having now removed the dash I now know what I'd do differently next time and having followed the helpful advice on here to make sure that I labelled everything and took copious photos on my mobile phone as I went, it all went back together and everything works. Which is nice! Very useful place this forum. Thank you. ![[Linked Image]](https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-kKWzS5V/0/2fd1d177/X2/i-kKWzS5V-X2.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-wV4rtdX/0/943611c7/X2/i-wV4rtdX-X2.jpg)
