Interesting point Heinz, and I can understand that ones surroundings can well affect the way we perceive sound, however I suspect the initial difference which I was attempting to highlight, was that of the sound experienced remotely from the machine when compared with the sound from inside, relative to any one machine.
It seems logical(?) that if enclosed within an elderly machine that there may be a considerable amount of mechanical noise, as seems apparent in the Spitfire vid mentioned. In the case of my comparisons between the Pur Sang and the Morgan, while I did mention the likely effect of the canyon walls reflecting the exhaust note of the Morgan compared with the more open space in which the Pur Sang was mostly recorded, it seemed to my ears that the Pur Sang was a bit of a disappointment in that is was more mechanically noisy, and as such the exhaust note was perhaps not as prominent as I might have expected, which I found a tad disappointing compared with that if the short clip of the Type 35 used as intended..
I suspect that the positioning of the microphone is very important in the car vids, and I do not doubt the quality of the equipment used by the producer of the Pur Sang/Morgan vids given there was no wind roar, and also that the Pur Sang did not have the advantage of a full windscreen, which I suspect would make a difference to mechanical noise experienced, in that such a situation the Morgan`s windscreen might make it`s exhaust sound more prominent..? Of course the Pur Sang being correct in almost every detail, would as a Vintage race car, be devoid of the extra weight of sound deadening measures such as carpets... thus expose occupants to a very different aural experience entirely...(-:
I suspect any failing is of my own ability to imagine I might enjoy the reality of the physical experience driving a Pur Sang were it not for appreciation of it`s undoubted iconic lines, engineering and wonderful history..In my defence I admit to being perhaps too elderly to enjoy such an overtly raw experience these days.
Even in relation to enjoyment of my Morgan I find I have to be somewhat more selective on prevailing weather conditions, as it can feel a tad too raw on occasion, and even less fun if my good lady is aboard requiring side-screens, and worse still if the hood is required..at which time mechanical noise increases considerably, though with the old +8`s lack of resonators it would take a high degree of mechanical noise to drown it out..(-:
I note that the owner of the Pur Sang drove it across the US I take my hat off to him if he did it using fly screens and without face protection. Though I doubt the latter, or suspect he would still be wearing a scar or two.. I and my good lady have done a similar length trip in my Morgan, from Central Scotland down to the Amalfi Coast and back home over three weeks, which I felt was a real adventure, but we were younger back then, and from that short on the road vid of the Pur Sang, I`m glad we did our trip in a Morgan...(-:
K, I think Brian/Mossy does a great job of capturing the sound of his Morgan with what I suspect is an "action" camera...? Unless he hides a sound crew somewhere about the Mog somewhere
