The pump sounds quicker but it does cost more money. I ordered a pump just in case :-)

Question for those who have done this job:
My original pump suddenly died at 2 years of life, around 3500 miles on it. It was replaced under warranty by my dealer. I now have 1.5 years on the replacement and about 2000 miles. I am considering either preemptively replacing this one with the Walbro, versus “prepping” a Walbro to replace when the current “factory” one dies. Of course, choosing the latter means being ready to change it roadside and carrying it around until the time comes. Do you think the Walbro is enough of an improvement to change it preemptively? How long would you expect it to last? Having done the swap yourself, what is your thought on a roadside emergency replacement? Thanks.

While I'm sure the pump can be changed at the roadside, having done the job, I would really prefer to do it in the comfort of the shop. It's not a difficult job, just a bit fiddly. As I recall, even taking the time to clean everything up in the rear wheel area (before the install to prevent dirt ingress), it was only about 90 minutes start to finish.

A genuine Walbro pump should last for a very long time, as in many years, as they are used in OEM applications that routinely see 150k+ miles of life. As for is it worth it to change preemptively, hard to say. If the dealer used a decent brand pump then you should be good to go for years. If they used the same no-name POS that came (with my car at least) from the factory, then I would replace it now, as it probably failed while I was typing this.

I agree Steve
Not so hard to do even on the roadside.

I had the same dilemma as the original pump had done 19k miles so I changed it over the winter just for peace of mind.

The Walbro pump is a lot louder than the original one on ignition on and priming the fuel system but I can’t hear it for the rest of the din after firing it up.

Likewise mine had done 25,000 so I changed it for a Walbro as a precaution. It is definetly possible to do it at the road side, I changed the complete fuel pump assembly on a M3W that had only covered 1,000 miles in a French carpark.

As others have said, it can be done at the side of the road and as yours has been replaced recently probably the locking ring is not corroded into place yet. For the effort involved in changing it, the peace of mind once it has been replaced by a more reliable item and not having to carry the spare pump module and tools to change it, I would go for the preemptive change. If you wait for it to fail it will be at the worst time possible, it's one of those rules. wink

My OEM pump failed at 2100 miles at 11600 ft on an exposed narrow mountain road, luckily I was going downhill at the time so coasted to a safe spot to await a tow home. Although it only took me about an hour to fit the new Wally pump it was much easier, cleaner and safer to do it in the garage.
