Has anyone here swapped from centrelock wire wheels to centrelock alloy wheels?

I think it’s a straight swap but getting the alloys isn’t easy.

You will need to carefully check against your own wheels as yours is a Plus4 and will be 15" rims the lightweight Morgan alloys are 16" rims and 7" wide so I think maybe wider than the standard wheels on your car.

The offset would need to be checked too, so exercise caution.

The Plus 8 can interchange wheels as both sets are the same dimensions and offset.

As above the Morgan lightweight alloys are like hens teeth.

Maybe you have found another 15" alloy centrelock supplier, if that's the case just ignore all that stuff above all you would need to check is the width and offset then.

You could let make some aluminum wheels by Imagewheels. No cheap but good quality. Several Morgans, like the 4/4 80th anniversary or the ARP4 have Imagewheels. They would make them to your measurements including a center piece to match your centre lock mounting. The best would be to send one of your whells to them, if you have a spare.

No relationship with Imagewheels, just an interested spectator.

Heinz, knowing you I and others here have Porsche interests, I thought this vid on the complexities of removal and re-fitting centre lock wheels might be of interest to some...?

Though think he may well have missed on some detail, hard to imagine I know.. (-: Apparently reported elsewhere that it is a Porsche requirement, that the wheels are torqued to the required setting with the wheel off the ground...

Sorry if this seems like thread drift, but I wonder if there may be any such requirements relative to Morgan centre lock wheels, best to be aware of before spending rather a lot of cash..?

I have seen that vid before and it prompted me to ask on here and to two well respected Morgan dealer mechanics the recommended torque settings for our Morgan centrelocks . Unfortunately none had an answer including the factory except very tight . Mine are done up tighter than I would like but I am shy of running them less so . And after seeing a good number in the UK and Europe of plus 8 cars running these with no issues I take GoMogs dire warnings of death and mayhem with a pinch of salt.

waikiore, I must admit to not having read the warnings you type of on GoMoG.

My interest in centre locks was entirely Porsche related, and thought to post the vid lest it be worth consideration to those who are thinking of spending cash to convert to such wheel fixings for their Morgan....

For Morgan not to have information available on torque settings for centre locks comes as no great surprise to me, less so would be my expectations of Porsche engineering...

As for dire warnings of death and mayhem.... Seems you may wish to promote the idea that GoMoG information may be best taken with a pinch of salt or perhaps disregarded...If so I`m left to wonder why...hmm..?

George this is the section Murray made reference to and I know he uses gomog regularly.

Like Murray I have the Morgan Lightweight alloys and have had no issues with them provided common sense is applied and that takes the form of a 2' bar to tighten and a 6' bar to release.

Thanks for the heads-up Richard, that which was written would seem worrying indeed. I had heard mumblings in times past of issues relating to centre-locks but was none too interested at the time as I was up to my neck in my self build nonsense.

I do understand that there was a degree of animosity relative to GoMoG, more perpetuated by some than others, as ever seems to be the way when there may be groupings of alpha males, the sort of stuff that caused the eMog demise, I suspect has been the case on other internet forums... ?

Whether the GoMoG information on these wheels might be accurate or not, I have no idea but would be really disappointed to discover there was any desire to spread disinformation.

George I have no issues with GoMog and have frequently used them for the wealth of information resident there, so I think you may have got the wrong impression,


however Lornes warnings and my own questions remaining without more quantifiable answers than Rich has given has caused me to investigate the early Aeros and various other centrelock users (mainly competition cars) to be better informed and hopefully safer out there.
