https://www.confused.com/motorbike-...-motorbike-modifications-to-your-insurer

I just found out something I didn’t realize. If you modify your M3W with performance enhancements such as stages 1, 2, and 3 including ECU changes you must notify your insurer of these changes otherwise risk invalidation of your insurance upon a claim and also risk being held accountable for not divulging this information to the insurance company. I have been ignorant of this and first thing Monday will be calling Hagerty.

I’m posting this because I would suspect many of you aren’t aware of this either.

So you better not post on here that you all knew that and I’m the only one.

Think most owners are aware of this but may think it will never happen that they make a claim.
Even if you fail to declare an older claim the companies share the information.
Think the even the use of different wheels that are not manufacturers standard can cause trouble with a claim

Thats the case in UK & has been for many years, mods of any description must be divulged. It used to be necessary to let them know if you fitted winter tyres but they have dropped the nonsense now. No doubt many who do ECU tuning dont tell as nothing is obvious unlike wide wheels. When getting a quote there is a question asking is the vehicle standard specification, is that not the case in USA?

I wonder if this includes modifications (or lack of them) to "prevent" the chassis cracking issues?
Just a thought

Here in Spain you can't change / modify your car without communicating it to the traffic authorities and passing a new MOT test to approve the modifications. And most of the times (99%), if these modifications are related with a change of engine performance / emissions, they will be rejected.

So, my "modifications" can't be but very simple (for example a simple change of the air intake) gloomy

As you already mentioned, you can't even change the tires for others that are not in the technical specifications card approved by the MOT.

Hi TimG,

I’m talking about making changes after the initial insurance policy has been established. I’m sure they wanted to know the status of the vehicle when it was new.

Applies to any vehicle; I know of a Morgan owner who was rear ended (not badly) when the insurance adjuster inspected the car he noted modifications to the suspension (anti tramp bars, etc) that were not standard and other upgrades that had not been reported. Even though the other driver was at fault that drivers insurance company refused to pay out, big legal proceedings which cost a fortune and a great deal of time. I guess the moral of the story is "Upgrader beware".

I read somewhere that not declaring a non standard satnav would invalidate your insurance.
The job of Insurance assessor is to find an excuse not to have to pay out!

The insurance adjuster checks for everything on a vehicle if they can reduce a claim they are doing their job.
I had a no fault accident I had put new tyres on the car three weeks before,I was ask to produce and invoice to prove I hadnot replaced them after the accident !
Think about what you are suggesting ,I could put a high power engine in my Morgan without uprating the brakes etc and hope the insurance will pay out?
