Steve, I bought my first Morgan 2 years ago and have enjoyed it immensely. It is like driving a classic car without working on it all of the time. I think it’s a wise move compared to many cars as running costs are low once you have got over the initial high purchase price. You will however be driving something special quite unlike the cars made by everyday manufacturers.

We moan about our Morgans but love them at heart. The most fun you can have with clothes on!. If you look upon it as a way of life and belonging to a quirky and sometimes dysfunctional family of eccentrics rather than owning a car you will get the most from being a custodian.

Welcome Steve from sunny Pembrokeshire! My car was originally supplied by BHM and they are a really helpful team of people. This forum has been a blessing to me since ownership in January2020 (Morgan Virgin) and I cannot praise the members enough, looking forward to meeting some of the Welsh domiciled ones when able, until then have been carrying out umpteen mods and upgrades to suit my own taste - every MOG is an individual statement, as am sure you will find out.

A warm welcome to TM.

The best thing about a Morgan is that they are fun to drive at any speed. You will gradually become accustomed to the smiles they generate.

There is lots of advice on TM and don't be afraid to ask any question.

Just beware, they are addictive.

Our first Mog was a 3.0L Roadster, we then stepped into the "Dark Side" with an Aero chassis Plus 8. But whatever is under the body, they are still Morgans.
I also looked at classics, but concluded I wanted a classic driving experience, not a classic maintenance experience.

The Roadster required a bit more TLC than a modern car, but we loved it and I learned a lot. I also made a lot of new friends.
We moved to the Plus 8 because we needed an automatic, because of some joint problems my wife had to put up with,
The Plus 8, like the new PlusSix and PlusFour are modern cars in terms of maintenance, but not in terms of character and ride.

Put it this way...
Spend £80k on a modern car and no one cares and in 3 years it is worth £40k, if you are lucky.
Spend £80k on a Morgan and in 3 years it will be worth close to the purchase price, and along the way you and everyone who sees the cars will smile.
What price happiness?

Warning: Motorsport may be dangerous, Morgans are addictive. You will know within 6 months it you have become addicted.... there is no cure, no therapy, no hope.

Wow! Thank you for such a warm welcome, if that does not tell me I've made the right decision, then nothing else could.

In response to a few questions and suggestions -

* I am based in Witney, west of Oxford. I believe there is someone on the forum nearby (maybe North Leigh)
* I heed the warning on the power to weight ratio, I have experienced being bitten by the backend through a lapse in attention previously, a long time ago but I really do not want to experience it again
* Based on reading alone, I am sold on the idea of a front and rear suspension upgrade (though it appears getting it right can be tricky). ironically, when I speak to Keith, he gives me a wry smile as if I am being rash. I'm planning on putting some miles in (hopefully in a controlled manner) and then decide
* Yes, I do plan on joining MSCC and OxMog...I think I'll need the guidance

I was 'bitten' as soon as I started taking the option seriously, the ability to invest in the vehicle is really attractive and seeing how people on the forum were so engaged, not just in their own vehicles but those of their peers is a clear sign of how addictive owning a Morgan can be. Full disclosure, I expect I will need a friendly mechanic, I'd be fibbing to say I'm handy with a spanner.

When I was buying new cars, the excitement was in the selection and specification of the car, once you had it, the fun was gone. With the Morgan, it feels as though the fun is only just beginning.

I look forward to posting a few pictures in the near future.

'the fun is only just beginning" is an accurate assessment of what is to come. It may take a while to bond fully but the learning process is rewarding and I would defer thoughts of modifications etc until this is complete.

one other comment. If the car is on the original tyres they will be 6 years old. They may look good but at that age the compound hardens & that means you lose:-
1. Grip. When I bought my Roadster the tyrs were 8 years old. I managed a 180 degree skid of damp road with diesel.
2. the tyres provide a lot of the suspension function hence the low 22 psi pressure. As the walls harden the ride hardens.

The tyres should have an age code on them.
