I once owned a Guzzi Le Mans MKIII with Lanfanconi pipes i.e. no baffles just expansion chambers. We tested it at work in Vlaardingen, Holland it hit 110 dBa.
Short term I fitted those things that go over sink plug holes to stop hair going down, that gave 15 dBa reduction!
I bought new exhausts eventually.

In my old rallying days the noise limit was 84 Dba. We used steel wool and an old U2 battery up the exhaust pipe if there was any problems!

You sure about that Taffmog? It's current 98 dbA at 2/3 maximum revs.

G701PCA was regularly 96/97 on a 3" Ashley but Ian Williams didnt seem too bothered by it. Neither did Ronnie Roberts, never picked me up on anything on that car!

Did restricted night road rallies have the same noise restrictions as daytime stage rallies?

I don't know but I would think not. In the 80s our Kraft R&D facility in Perlach, Bavaria was in a mixed housing & industrial zone.
The day time noise limit was 86dBa but at night it went to 74dBa ( a lot lower). The condensate traps on the cheese vats were a constant issue & I was in charge of the services so it took many attempts to kill the noise level.

Yes 84 Arwyn, I think (?), could be 86, I’ll dig out an old blue book to check. That was 1970 - 75, a period when Road rallying was going through a rough patch. My ‘S’ was always near the limit even with twin exhaust boxes. 98 is LOUD !
Jack Romain did a lot is those days to pacify the locals, eventually leading to banning twin cams, twin DCOE’s, 4 spotlights etc.
