So - driving down the motorway yesterday in the tin-top when there is a loud bang, the car bounced slightly but nothing seen before in front of us, or behind, after, the "impact". Hit the hazard warning lights and saw the car ahead, with a roof box and trailer, doing the same. Both pulled up on the hard shoulder and the other driver said he had exactly the same experience and thought something had been knocked off his car or trailer and then hit us. Nothing missing from his car and no damage whatsoever to mine. Very short clip from my dash cam linked here. https://youtu.be/ktwepfu7jC8Road absolutely smooth, didn't feel anything through the steering, or road wheels, "impact" seemed to be on the bodywork of the car, but as can be seen from the video, nothing on the road ahead of me and nothing visible through the windscreen before the impact, impact wasn't great but was enough to trigger the video protection lock on the dash cam and to pop open the little sunglasses compartment above the rear view mirror and to move the rear view mirror slightly. Felt like something soft had hit us, but you can see the slight bounce the car made as it hit, so not a light object. Inspection at the time and since getting home showed no impact mark at all on or under the car. Got the heart rate up for both my wife and I and enough to scare the other car's occupants too. None of the other traffic reacted to it, though I now see a couple of brake lights coming on briefly further ahead at the same moment. Any bright ideas as to what this might have been? Sonic boom as suggested by my son? searched the news items for the area where it happened but no such boom reported. There was no sideways movement in the car, so I don't think it was wind from the large red load on a lorry going the opposite direction just as the "impact" happened. Really strange! Any thoughts Ken

Sonic boom? Is it in an area where fighter jets on exercise may pass.
We had two year before last when two Eurofighters were scrambled to intercept a French Boeing 777 passenger jet that had lost radio communications. When they reached the jet the pilot was able to make a prearranged manoeuvre to indicate all was well.
I can only assume that if it went off course and headed towards a city it risked being shot down. A frightening thought.

Very strange indeed. I cant offer any thoughts other than a sonic boom
Looks to me like the silver SUV was too close to the van and dabbed the brakes. (Its about 2 seconds after the bang before he pops the brakes on) The guy with trailer reacted to that as he overtook the car and truck which just coincided with the bang ? However if the guy with the trailer felt it one could assume that others did too. Cant see any other lights coming on though.
Very odd indeed

Is there another type of common atmospheric pressure ‘boom’?

Latest speed camera using "hard radar"? You were at 71mph. A gas pocket exploding? it didn't sound like a sonic boom. Concorde used to make a boom boom noise but that was only one boom.

Nearby lightning strike? Didn't sound like one of those either. A Canadian friend who used to spend long periods over here was a Scimitar GTE fan. He owned several, wanted to take at least one back to Canada but the red tape put him off. One late evening driving across near the top of a local hill there was a very loud bang and the car jumped sideways a foot or so. He could find no marks on or under the car and eventually came to the conclusion it was a close lightning strike.
