This will help you verify any lightning or thunderstorms in the appropriate area at the time if it's of any help. It has a history function.

Is it likely a lightening strike If both you and the car infront felt it?
Im not up on these sort of things but I would have thought if you both felt it, it’s more likely to be a air pressure thingy if it is atmospheric

At the exact moment you got "hit" by this bang, you can see on the other side of the motorway a huge crane. If one of the tyres of this crane just exploted, you would have felt exactly what you felt. When a high pressure truck tyre explodes, and the tyres on this kind of crane a really high pressure ones, you better are not close! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=294Wu6O0uW0That's my bet! And despite the crane driver would have felt the tyre explosion, he wouldn't have stopped but many miles away, and you wouldn't see him stopping on the other side. So, you couldn't have a clue it was one of his tyres that blasted.

Romulans, a real pain to see when cloaked... I had a similar thought, but glad you’re all OK and no apparent damage. Bud 4/4 - Stanley

Funnily enough, last night in a built up area with light traffic, we heard a loud bang. It was like a firework going off close by. But I did wonder if the space saver in the boot had popped.
Up ahead was a boy racer Citroen.
A couple of miles later, his exhaust flamed with a huge bang. That's what we heard earlier.

The crane tyre puncture certainly seems like the most plausible cause. One of our local club members experienced a similar situation in his Roadster. He was on a motorway alongside a lorry when a tyre exploded and pushed him across two lanes which were fortunately clear at the time although it left him shocked.

Yes, I had a lorry trailer tyre explode next to me years back and the rubber went clean through the wing panel and damaged my McPherson strut. The noise was frightening and it knocked me off course.
Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

Some great thoughts!! Love the inventiveness of this group - clearly slightly insane, but definitely inventive!! Cloaked Romulans and the Death Star tractor beam are clearly the likely cause!! Sadly from the point of view of creating a good story, I think the tyre burst is the most likely reason, although that crane thing was well past the car in front when we felt the impact, so surprised it would have hit him too. Sonic boom - still a possible - we were just north of Nottingham on the M1, so there are airforce bases around there - however they are only supposed to go supersonic over the sea unless there is an emergency like the one mentioned by Gambalunga - they usually "own up" to those events shortly after but I can't find any reports of them. There were thunderstorms about on Monday I think - the clouds don't look like thunder storm clouds from the video clip, but ...maybe! Not a jaguar red, Gambalunga - a boring Mazda SUV!!
Thanks to all!!
