There was absolutely no impact on the road wheels at all and nothing felt through the steering wheel, so not a pothole - just the downward thump. I have thought about it a lot and also feel the large red crane was too far away for any blast of air to affect us - even further away from the car ahead whose driver described exactly the same impact - we both felt something had hit the top of the car (as I said in the original post - he thought something had been knocked off his car), but, while enough to bounce the car, it was not that solid and no marks on the car - hence the blast of air theories (whether sonic boom, tyre burst or lightning). The closest explanation to what we felt was the sonic boom, but can find no reports of that over Nottinghamshire that day. Mystery persists!! My bet is that you experienced a Dry Microburst downward draught airflow. If there were high altitude storms in the area then micro bursts can be formed at quite a distance from the actual storm, if a dry burst then there would be no rain, lightening or sound associated with it just downward pressure and then lateral force when hitting the surface.

Microburst is intersting suggestion! However, I would have expected to see that reflected in movement of the bushes next to the road, and I do to see that in the video. An exploding tire is the strongest hypothesis up to now.

Ok everyone, and specially Ken… stop it. You can confess now We’re grown men and know what this is all about… Let’s be sincere. We all use this technique from time to time when we’re driving in a quiet car. You need to decompress the digestive system filled with this haggis and steak pie with you had with your soda, and you’re scared it will be loud. And as you don’t want to scare your copilot, you suddenly talk out loud simultaneously to the discharge, and move the steering wheel to shake the car and make more confusion. But stopping on the hard shoulder and quickly open the door – to ventilate just in case – is a master move. Ken: it was perfectly executed. Congratulations.

An exploding tire is the strongest hypothesis up to now. Ken reports it as a downward thrust a tire would be a one side rocking, the lateral air flow to reach the bushes would occur seconds after the initial event the video has moved forward from that position so would not necessarily been seen.

ha ha, that would have been a belter to have stopped the car in front as well.
Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.
