Hello folks,

It seems that the input shaft seal on my bevelbox is leaking. Has anyone replaced it yet?

Would appreciate any advice and some part numbers?

Thanks!

There is a good write up about it in the MTWC Bulletin if I recall correctly. There was also a Thread here somewhere talking about it.

I have replaced mine, fairly straightforward full instructions and part numbers can be found on the MTWC website, just remember the pinion nut is LH thread .

Replaced the pinion seal yesterday, no drips overnight. Taking her out this morning to see if the problem is solved.
Modified the drive shaft hoops so that now I can unbolt them and bolt them back in. Should have been designed that way in the first place instead of being welded in.

How long did it take you to replace the seal on your own?

Is it a matter of hours or do you need a couple of days? Is it "easy" or the kind of screaming in pain job because you hammer your fingers scared and suffering many other physical injuries while doing it?

Removing the bb is not terrible. Slacken the drive belt. Remove seatback, remove drive shaft cover, mark drive shaft to bb flange so you can get them back together in the same orientation. Unbolt bb and wiggle it away from belt and car.

Opening up the bb after you have drained it is easy. Remove bolts and use two large flat screwdrivers to pop off the side plate and pinion gear. If yours is older i would be tempted to have a new gasket ready to replace the old one.

From that point on i have not taken out the shaft seal. Refer to the MTWC instructions.

Just got the seal. Any chance you can take a picture of your modified hoops? What did you use to hold the carrier plate in place? Do you remember the size of the retaining nut? Any particular torque spec? Would appreciate any further advice:-)

To replace the input shaft seal is not a big job Marmota but will take 2 or 3 hours to gain access, drain the BB, do the seal change, fill the BB with oil and put everything back. You do need to plan the job as it requires a few special tools, the gag to hold the flange and some large sockets for the shaft nut and to push the new seal in with. You could do this in your apartments underground parking area but, like most jobs, it would be much easier in a well equipped workshop. No fingers should be lost laugh2 .
