I have a video of my five year old son and his mates exactly duplicating this one....I should have sold the rights all those years ago...

After an interesting foray into the realms of 'what happens to music if you think too much' smile

Here's something from the more predictable end of the spectrum .... don't like all this guy's stuff but this is what all my inept blues riffs morph into in my dreams .... and then I wake up smile

https://youtu.be/cZ-M3dvw20Q

Sorry it's a link ... having been able to use the clapperboard thing to just post the vid in the past ... it doesn't seem to work with this one.

K, thanks for posting the link, no doubt an astounding guitarist but the string slap (?) seemed to spoil the performance by some degree... However I could not even hope to play a drum, so what do I know. Other than that I am not the envious type, however of all the wonderful instruments in the world, I can arrive at the periphery of envy relative to anyone who can get a tune out of a guitar...Sigh..!

Typing of tunes, perhaps you might like to beam this one up, a lovely wee Irish lass with a wonderful voice accompanied by a wonderful acoustic guitar player, created during lockdown I think.

Or try and think less

Quite a few avant-garde free form jazz musicians try and explore the sounds that both come from the subconscious mind and are interpreted by the listener by doing what visual artists like Jackson Pollock explored on canvas

Creating spontaneous music trying to disengage the conscious mind having pre-learnt and well practiced virtuoso techniques

I always think it’s quite exciting when done in a ensemble though and they can feed off the other musicians

I don’t listen to a lot of it and probably prefer the exploration a little bit melodious by the likes of Cecil Taylor or Ornette Coleman but it’s great to dip into occasionally and listen live

Thanks Ian ... tried pasting it into the 'youtube video' slot on the menu and removing the s from https but steadfastly stayed as a link ..... must try harder.

Luddite ... could be you're listening on better equipment .... on my phone the slap is manageable .... like the devotional clap of an invisible congregation (sorry, came over all poetic there) smile

Stewart ..... like Mr Pollock, although the thinking may be partially removed from the actual creative act, there's still been haystack's worth of earnest agonizing and overthinking in smoky rooms to come up with the idea of 'not thinking' smile

Music (and Art) is a broad church and there's plenty of room for whatever floats our individual boats.

Unforgettable Stewart. What's not to like about that performance! surrender

I bought a double album of Phil Minton’s Feral Choir called ‘Songs from a Prison Diary’ many years ago and I think it’s the only album I’ve ever bought where I haven’t made it all the way through.

Every time I put it on, someone comes into the room either angry or distressed and I have to turn it off

And I’m too scared to put it on in the house when I’m alone

Amazing!

I'm quite good with the comb and paper or the dustbin lid and broom handle if you fancy a jamming session Stewart!

Somewhat animated by the jazz pieces here, in the free section with Ornette Coleman, I come across more traditional jazz. One of my songs for the island is the original recording of "Good Bye Pork Pie Hat" by Charles Mingus in 1959, which Mingus wrote when he learned of the death of Lester Young, who always wore such hats. Although John Handy's sax solo is very respectful of the fact that it doesn't play Lester Young, I consider it one of the most beautiful solos in the recording history of jazz. The solo is so fitting to the song that Joni Mitchel memorized this spontaneously created sequence of notes for her 1979 cover version...also a respectful homage. Unfortunately I only have audio recordings here, but it's may be interesting for some, listening to both solos and comparing them. Both are great in their own way. The first one as a jazz improvisation, the second one by Joni Mitchell as a lecture song.

And...if someone knows blues but not jazz, this song is a bridge you can build. Someone once said as a definition which I really like... (Real) jazz is blues that went to college.
