We don't have M ways here in darkest Suffolk but we did have a tractor driver spill his load of fruit from his trailer on a roundabout today. Maybe he was reading the Suffolk Gazette.
That wire is nasty for any following vehicle if it hits at windscreen height.

I had a number of people say they were not going to wait and would go to the right of the truck. Until I pointed out that if they hit the cable just right whiplash would probably half the car. Some people are so entitled.

Is that the driver stood by the truck? Presumably he was so shocked he did not think to put his hi viz vest on.

Distraught would be a better word for the poor devil. Woman and child in a FIAT500 vs lorry. Don't think the hi-vis was on his mind as he was just getting out. The relief when he saw her get out with the child was palpable. I think it is all too easy to underestimate the results of opposite lane impacts. I will admit it was a relief to see her get out. It reset my focus.

I was once on the old 2 lane bit of the M1 south of Luton heading in the rush hour to London.
A twat in an XR2 was weaving his way up the lanes. Inevitably he hit a lady in Capri. She spun & all hell broke loose as we tried to stop. She was in a state of total shock. The XR2 guy was grinning like an idiot and blaming her. The police arrived & he lost his smile as we witnesses all told what we saw.

Definitely a clean under wear moment.

The lorry had been coming towards us on the other side of the road. The 500 was on this side of the road to begin with. The artic driver has a front steering tyre blow out as he was performing a lane change and then had gone straight through the barrier. I weaved and slowed the traffic then parked blocking across the road. The steel wire was in quite some tension. Fortunately the occupants of the 500 (lady and child) were physically okay. The lorry driver was terrified he had killed them and in a worse state. The lorry was in excellent condition so not a maintenance issue, it was one of the mobile flight simulators you see at posh events and fairs. The A34 was closed for the best part of a week. All from a tyre going pop.

You were lucky it was a wire rope barrier Alistair. Normal TCB 9 Armco so called) is not designed to stop trucks and wont do so.

Going back to the OPs post I must have gone back and forwards through that video at leat 10 times without seeing a single thing. I doubt the crane tyre theory for two reasonf. First is that the OPs car jumped after the crane was past and secondly because any blast would likely have been defclected by the concrete barrier which is shaped to do just that. I did wonder if it was one of the many potholes we have in our roads but couldnt see one.But the camera and likely the car did jump up so it must have been something on the road surface.

The tensioned steel cables are invariably lethal to any motorcyclist who hits them, it acts like a band saw. I hate them with a passion.

There was absolutely no impact on the road wheels at all and nothing felt through the steering wheel, so not a pothole - just the downward thump. I have thought about it a lot and also feel the large red crane was too far away for any blast of air to affect us - even further away from the car ahead whose driver described exactly the same impact - we both felt something had hit the top of the car (as I said in the original post - he thought something had been knocked off his car), but, while enough to bounce the car, it was not that solid and no marks on the car - hence the blast of air theories (whether sonic boom, tyre burst or lightning). The closest explanation to what we felt was the sonic boom, but can find no reports of that over Nottinghamshire that day. Mystery persists!!

Ken. I still think my theory of a warp in the space/time continuum has some merit?
