Thanks for the good ideas! So far I have tried a thin layer of cork as well as rubber, both attached using double sided tape on the underside of the cowl. I think I am going to try scrap leather and super glue to the cowl and see how that holds up.

Leather and Evostik seems to be holding up well for me. Better than the rubber and double sided tape from the factory.
