I may have mentioned this before but it's important to keep the catalytic convertor hot. The original GDI heat shield is a perfect fit, with just a couple of cut outs for the original application, but it fits the AR catalytic convertor well.

I made a front deflector plate when I fitted the exhaust, to keep the road dirt away from the cat.

Anyway I thought a second layer wouldn't go amiss, so I've added some woven heat resistant blanket, (from Agriemach) - and made a stainless steel cover to hold it in place. After cutting to size, I bent the plate around the old cat to get the right curvature.

Fitting is a bit fiddly, but it looks shiny shiny now.

Dave has previously given an excellent expert technical review of his car having had the same done, so here is the abridged completely non technical layman's view:

It's faster down the range........a bit
It's faster further up the range......a lot
It pops and bangs.........alot (maybe too much)
It is loud and raspy on acceleration ..........alot
It tends to "hum" (is that the drone Dave was talking about?)........alot

On the whole, at this early stage, out of ten I would give it seven (nine if it was quieter).

I'm sure I'll get used to the noise, however, in the unlikely circumstance I decide I can't live with it, which is the noisy/hummy/droney bit that I replace to make it quieter (I asked to keep the old system)?

Manifold?
Cat?
Silencer?
Twin tailpipes?

Or is there another way to reduce the noise without replacing bits?

Thanks.

A volume control wouldn't go amiss, maybe I should have it converted to electric! hide

I noticed Librands do an adapter to cover For the tail pipe To reduce the noise. I don’t know if you think it’s still too loud but this may be an option.

Thanks Hawki, however my tailpipes already look like the acoustic one in the Librands link.

They say that a bad workman always blames his tools and so it is in this case.

Having lived with it for a week and taking Dave and Alan’s comments on board regarding driving style, I have learned to change mine to adapt. It’s become apparent that whereas in the previous guise I tended to be a bit more “urgent” in my acceleration at all speeds, now I am a tad more leisurely in my style giving a gradual press of the pedal rather than a slam. The result is a healthy burble after gear change etc but no pops unless I instigate them.

If I drive the car as if I have stolen it, it wakes up and screams, shouts, pops and growls at me.
.
Chuffed to bits with the transformation and thanks go to Oakmere for carrying out the work. thumbs

It sounds perfect combination, quite then you want and noisy when you want the engagement. I’m seriously considering getting it done

If you ever get up Lancashire way, you're more than welcome to give it a go.

Well I been thinking for months on either a new plus four or a club sport upgrade to my current GDI. Having had a good look at the new car, which I like, and speaking to a couple of dealers I have decided it’s just too much money for the benefit I would get.

I have therefore been in touch with Cain at Wolf performance and am in the process of ordering the exhaust and remap following the comment on this thread. I’ll keep an update on progress.

Maybe a new plus Four in a few years time when beta testing is complete
