I do enjoy these tricks of the trade stories (thanks Colin) and the mention of core plug failures brought back to mind the failure of one such on an old and abused 60`s Lotus Elan I used for work which involved a few hundred miles a week of travel all over the countryside. Fortunately I carried tools as it was always at risk of breaking something. After a bit of thought as how to affect a repair I tried a two pence coin, which was a tad oversized, I dished it slightly with my ball peen hammer until it would fit with the domed side facing out, and once in place gave the dome a hit to tighten things up... Worked a treat, till I could replace it with the appropriate part. All be it I had defaced a coin of the realm..!!!

I have just rebuilt a Crossflow 1600 engine I am using Evans Waterless Coolant for Classic cars. It’s expensive and can’t be mixed with water,but it gets good reviews

Completely unnecessary for Crossflow. All you need is the original Bluecol type coolant and water, even a competition engine

And it finds every tiny little leak, and has less thermal capacity than traditional antifreeze. I don't recommend the stuff

Ditto , why use a less thermally efficient coolant. It means effectively you need a bigger rad.

I should have added an example to substantiate my "Good luck" comment. Four years ago during a Morgan Tour of the Rockies event one of the +8s in our group developed an overheat and lost coolant due to a wire coming off the fan. For a 3 minute roadside wire connector replacement repair and water top up he had to wait 4.5 hours for the tow truck and then have a 5 hour tow home to top up with EW. Lesson; carry EW with you.

I researched it at one point, but decided for the cost and negligible benefit, I'd stick to water. Quite glad, because since then I've changed two core plugs (one was an engine out job), fitted a new heater, and a new water pump, new hoses, electric fan and re 'plumbed' the heater.

Would have cost me a small fortune using EW.......

I've used Comma G30 in my 2011 Plus 4 with super sport engine (Mazda MZR which is essentially a Duratec, an MX5 engine) for over 5 years since fitting my Mulfab ali rad. It is recommended to use an OAT antifreeze, i did change it in 2019 during routine maintenance using a 50/50 G30 and distilled water, no problems over this period.
I also use it in in my K series engined Elise which has something of a reputation for cooling issues, been using it for over 8 years 73k on the clock and no HGF issues or overheating. It is worth noting of the 2 companies Lotus and Rover one recommends OAT and the other recommends non OAT.
