Apparently the Morgan racers who use wrapped headers/exhaust manifold are finding that the increased exhaust gas temperature is reducing catalytic converter life, in some cases to a few hundred miles. The increased temperature is melting the innards and partially blocking the exhaust, so reducing power.

Obviously racing is a much harder test of the catalytic converter innards, and there are many different specs of cat for road and track. FIA approved cats are available for circuit use.

But this has made me nervous, so today I removed my exhaust wrap.

I'm not saying a word, but its nothing to do with the exhaust wrap.....

I have wrapped my manifold for over 60,000 km. All,ok. Besides, the metal cat can withstand more heat anyway. With the wrapping of the manifold it heats up faster and I also think that the exhaust fumes stay hotter and therefore are discharged faster so that new air can be sucked in better.

Could it be that the original cats fitted by the factory were pretty crap anyway?

Has anyone independently tested an original equipment AR sports cat during the three years before its MoT is due, I wonder? My sports-exhaust equiped Roadster has passed its MoTs, but 'only just' - thanks to an understanding tester.

My Plus8 is having an MOT next week. It has consistently been borderline on Lambda at top end when delving through previous owner MOT’s. However, checking the old MOT cert from last year it states limit is 1.03. In the DVLA website the emissions doc ( version 19) shows in the annex that Morgans have an upper limit of 1.05. The car passed last year with a reading of 1.03. I will wait and see what the test shows.
Question for an MOT expert...how would the emissions testing machine be set up to deal with the higher end Morgan limit? Can it be preset or a manual adjustment made if >1.03 is found?

It's all a bit unclear. My Roadster with a K&N was always right on 1.03, but it was never a problem because I know the tester over many years. I printed the page off just in case there was a query, but he was relaxed about it. With the standard air filter, the lambda drops below 1.03.

The answer to your question is: yes, they are pretty crap!
