Tyre age is being considered to become part of the MOT regs in a possible update, but they are still consulting on whether it will be an advisory for over (x) age or a mandatory fail

I also change tyres at 6 years, enjoying the subsequent improvement in grip and ride comfort.
Any TMers who have ridden motorbikes will be very aware of the reduction in wet weather grip, as the tyres age.

I am aware of a Morgan owner, with a very low mileage 18 year old car, which (he proudly states) “still has its original tyres”

I use 2 criteria for tyre life.
Tread depth. 3mm is a "get reacy to change" warning.
Age. 6 years max.
I rotate all 5 on the Mog so the spare gets use instead of just sitting there getting old and change all 5. It isn't there just for looks and needs to be usable.
When replacing I prefer tyres with good wet performance as that is when it is most needed. I currently have Avon ZV7 on recommendation here in TM as I couldn't get Yokohamas that were on before that. Well I could but in a lower profile....I don't want reduced ground clearance! Avons are performing well.

Normally mine have worn out before 6 years which is the time I would normally replace. As I said earlier the Toyo Proxes have worn remarkably well covering over 30k miles. They will be replaced in the Spring. There was a fatal accident on the M11 near here a year or so ago. MGB roadster flipped after a tyre deflated/burst and it was down to old tyres.
