Thanks Steve, Good to hear from you and glad that Almond is well loved! We'll have to try and organise a P4SS group meet in 2021 - conditions permitting of course.

Concerning the tyres, I thought I knew a lot about tyre perfromance but that was all based around new or nearly new tyres. Once you get into the realms of 9/10 year old tyres its really another world. I recommend to get them changed asap

The problem with Morgan tyres is that they simply do not wear out unless mileage is colossal. Most owners do less than 10K a year and tyres can easily last many years on such a light car.

We have a friend who was still running the original tyres on his '99 4/4 in 2015, they still had legal tread but were as hard as rocks. We convinced him that it was time to change them and he came back with a smile on his face as it had not only improved the ride but had transformed the 'feel' of the car.

What tyre are you going to fit to you P4SS? I’m in the process of fitting Minilites to my Plus 4 and want to get tyres that provide good wet and dry grip for spirited driving.

I have Toyo PXCF 2 94V XL on my SS

Run at 20 psi all round with Avos on softest setting...handles like a snarling go kart !!!

My local tyre fitter hates Avon's but and recommending Toyo's. Why did you go for XL's ?

As Kevfitz said I fitted Toyo Proxes. I stuck with the original size at 205/65 R15s and got the Toyo Proxes CF2 94V. You can see the spec and wet grip/noise ratings etc. on their web site https://www.toyo.co.uk/tire/pattern/proxes-cf2.

I've only had them for a few cold weeks and under the current restrictions haven't done many miles. Although having done a fair bit of tyre testing at an OEM during the earlier parts of my career I can say that I have no real negatives with the tyres and within the constraints of a Morgan chassis they perfrom well.

I think they are often specified for light commercials, as when I ordered them from my local tyre depot he asked me what van are they for. . That probably explains the XL availability although I confirm mine are not XL.

Not sure if you need XL for such a low mass car as a Morgan although they might provide more side wall stiffness which could give better steering response, especially at small steering inputs.

Certainly the non-XLs had lots more grip and feedback than the overaged Avons they replaced. But no surprises there.

They are also very comfortable taking out a lot of the small sharp impacts. There will probably be a difference in the XL and non-XL in that respect.

I think that you are right about the XL being for heavier vehicles. I recently replaced the tyres on my E class estate & it needed XL’s.

The Toyo’s certainly look like good value, especially when compared to the CR6zz I currently have fitted. So at the moment it looks like I’ll follow your lead and fit CF2’s

One other question, have you experienced any rubbing of the front Minilite inside rim against your suspension? There was a discussion about this a few years ago and the wheels I’ve bought seem to have had some contact in the past. The car is going to Cain’s (Wolf Performance) on Monday to check out the clearances.

Ian is correct about the XL specification.

I had 35 years with Goodyear Tyres..F1 and laterly Earthmover Tyres...quite a difference!!

The XL are stiff in the side wall and to my mind it suits the set up of the SS and my driving style.

No issue with rim rub on suspension but from a distant memory I believe early Minilites did catch on the suspension..I may be wrong about that !!!

Tyres catch on inner bodywoek on full lock but this happens with many Trads and is not an issue at MOT time.
