Aeroflot in the 80s, inland flights: Separate boarding for non-soviets to avoid close contact to Russians. Terrible chicken meal and strange tasting soft drinks. Waiting and waiting and waiting for flights that got finally cancelled around midnight without comments. I was happy when overnight trains were an alternative transport to get from A to B
I always enjoyed to travel - but not in the USSR ( CCCP )

Slight drift from Russia, I remember boarding an internal flight from Kathmandu to Lukla and arguing because they objected to the small swiss army knife still in my hand luggage. Whereas the guy in front of me wandered through with an uncased hunting rifle muzzle down over his shoulder. I still have said knife!

I took the cheapest business class flight from London to Dhaka many years ago on Bangladesh Airways. I was the only person up front on bench like seats when the wooden trolley came around with the drinks, occasionally getting the wheels stuck in the frayed carpet. It was a rather mature MD80 and I settled back to read the tatty inflight magazine handed to me by the trolly dolly. On the inside cover was the potted history of Bangladesh Airways, I read that I was on their second and only MD80, the first had apparently crashed recently while landing during delivery. I flew back on BA, but that’s another story.
Flying around Russia in the 80’s was always “interesting” my most vivid memory is the style of landing approach the ex military pilots had, it felt more like they were going to strafe the airfield, vodka for breakfast helped a lot.

Are you a spy Hannes? Not a spy but I spent years in the "East" to obtain business information for multinational companies for business development. Had lots of fun with the guys from "protocol". And their "system" had very nice ladies to check our reliability... Wild times, work hard - play hard was the philosophy then. Domestic flights in China were far more scary than the Russian ones.

I lived and worked in Central Eastern Europe residing in Warsaw and Moscow during the "good times", which on many occasions were anything but. I posted this previously on another thread, this was the communication medium we used: ![[Linked Image]](https://www.tm-img.com/images/2020/09/22/SBS122.md.jpg)

Bruce, we used Telex machines to send messages. Short wave receivers were standard to get some international news

Hannes; In our circus you would have been known as a "Linko", someone who operates and communicates openly, useful with attached risk.
